Fundraising ideas? So what are the secrets to raising money?

Posted by Joel G at 04/14/2001 10:17 AM EST

Student on team #442, Knight Riders, from Lee High School and NASA/ BOEING/ MEVATEC.

Well..this year our team was tight on money and we had to pay for some of the things ourselves, like our t-shirts, food money, and some other stuff. It wasn't to much no more than $150-$200 a person. Anyways next year we would like everything paid for and ready before the season begins . And besides getting big sponsers like NASA and other large cooperations what other ways can we generate money that is quick and effective. We experminted with some fundraising activities like selling coupon books and some other stuff but they generated less than $300. So does anyone have any suggestions that we could use during this offseason.
-Joel-
P.S. NASA is one our main sponsers and we might have cutbacks in our funding because there budget for the upcoming year has be cut so were just preparing so we'll be ready just in case NASA can't come thru as much as we need.

Use your robotics skills to generate money. For example, my team made this thing called Robosoccer... modified remote control cars with a ping pong ball in the middle of the field. The cars are let loose after the ball, and you have to score in the other guys teeny goal. We're soon to be setting up little traps like in battlebots on the field and making a selection of cars. Charge 1 dollar a game and voila!

no not for the entire trip, the $150-$200 was to pay for our t-shirts and money for food for each kid's meals for the Houston Regional and Nationals, our sponsers paid for transporation and hotel costs.

We had to shell out 300 dollars for our transportation and hotel costs on our own. Plus, we had to shell out additional money for eating while we were there... just be thankful that your sponsors paid for all that. Those were 400+ dollars that I could've used

Very true, Gui. I, unlike other members of my team , realize how fortunate the members of my team were financially.

No money for travel expenses

Verizon, our team sponsor gave us $17,000 with the stipulation that NONE of it be used for travel expenses. We had to run every purchase that used their money past them before we would get reimbursed.

Our students paid for everything themselves, basically. We did some fund-raising, but a lot of it came out of pocket as well. My expenses were separate from the team, but if I recall, they needed to have a deposit of $200! Personally, the trip to Nationals was over $1000 in expenses. I'd love to have to be able to worry about fundraising another $200 apiece. Instead, I'm saving for next year, so we can stay in a nicer hotel.

I totally agree with Gui and Karl(my fellow team member) and for you Joel(also a fellow team member) I can believe you posted something like that!!! I'm sure there are plenty of teams who had to pay for a lot of things themselves!! Look at the amount of people we had also, I'm sure teams took less people than us and still had to pay a lot of out of the pocket! So we are VERY fortunate to have to just pay for food and T-shirts. Stop being so darn Cheap Joel. Wake up and smell the Coffee! I also can't believe you were complaining about the hotel and the bus! Joel, you went on two free trips! Be thankful!!!

I apologize to other forum readers that had to read that, but I just had to get that out. I also apologize for going off on you in this way Joel.

P.S. Please ignore that comment about us paying for food from Joel.

Yeh I wish my team had money like that! Lucky kids you people, lucky lucky lucky! My team pays $800 for florida and $100 for regionals apiece, not including food. We had to fundraise ( still have to, ahhhh!!) in order to purchase and pay off for what we bought to build our robot, and robot cart! I wish we had money, it would be soo cool!!!

I was asking for fundraing tips, please understand
that, I know some teams had a hard time raising
money and I respect your effort and I think you
guys are the reason FIRST is so successful . I was
just thinking our team may be in delema next year
with money and I was thinking in advance on how
we could start rasing money now because we
might loose a lot of sponsers. Excuse me if I
sounded ungrateful and please forgive me.

Anthony I wasn't being cheap, or ungratefull and those words are harsh and wrong, I was asking for fundraing tips not an online bashing by a fellow team member. I am not angry just disappointed you said all that when you could have talked to me in person. I would also like to publicly apoligize if I affended anyone by asking there insight into funraising techniques I didn't think it would start this much controvery. Next time I'll make sure to to mention the words funding or money in any of my future posts. Thank You

I would like to apologize to everyone for using the words I used towards Joel, I know him personally and he is NOT ungrateful or cheap. In my post I was trying to let everyone know our TEAM was not ungrateful, because with Joel's post it made it seem like that. And with all of the other posts with people saying be grateful, it made our team look bad. But I made the team look worse by publically chastizing a fellow team member in the manner that I did. To reiterate Joel's post, he was not complaining because we had to pay for food and T-shirts. We may lose money next year so he was asking for fund raising tips so we won't have to pay for HOTELS and other expenses. Food money and T-shirts are the least of our worries. Thank You and I'm sorry.
