Re: Curie 2009!

I was having a Discussion with a driver of another Bright Orange team the other day about robot speed and just out of curiosity what are most of your robots geared for? I found out while talking to him I made a minor miscalculation and our robot is about 20% faster then I thought....

Just for reference we're running a Single CIM per side through standard Toughboxes with another sprocket reduction for an effective Gear Ratio of about 11:1. This puts our Speed at about 12fps under Ideal conditions, what about your robots?

Even faster 'eh? =P I might have to bring some new gears with me...!

We're geared straight out of the toughbox's, so 12.5:1. Which is about 10.5fps ideally, I think. It's around there. =P

Brad, the whole point of having Regolith this year was to stop the Drive Train Wars.... But, I'll still pack some extra sprockets just for good measure.

Ya right... my team is one of the ones that i think they created the game to foil our usual strategy (considering we have moved the player station( the reason why they have the ton of Velcro now) and we knocked over a human player station last year(at GLR, it was hilarious ))

im not sure what our gear ratio it, just that is is a weird odd number and we move at ≈9 ft/sec(i think, we made it faster at MSC so it may be that or faster, if you ask me in pits I'll know by then). we have a pair of fisher prices(i think) in the front and a pair of CIMs in the back, geared to the same rate.

(not on drive train so i don't know the exact stuff)

Re: Curie 2009!

Well, (most of) 2815 is up and ready for another day on Curie. We tried a different sprocket ratio yesterday in a practice match--you'd recognize it by the way the robot hardly moved. We've flipped it back to our original ratio, which seems to be running much better. The hood we've added also appears to do its job well, so we're feeling pretty good about it.

See y'all in Q1!

I'm using FRC-spy (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/frcspy.php?) when I'm not watching Curie (http://science.ksc.nasa.gov/robotics...-finals-2009/).

Thumbs down Re: Curie 2009!

I don't understand how a team can be ranked in the top 15 during qualification matches and wasn't picked by an alliance. This is ridiculous, don't teams scout?

Not all the teams pick teams depending on their ranking. I am not sure what happened because I am not at Atlanta, but teams may need a robot that can deliver EC cell or can play defense. May be they chose to pick other teams over yours.

Again, I am not sure why you guys were not picked.

Scouting is what wins the Championship. I know that was true for us in 2005. We found a great under rated team in 503. Our scouts were amazed they were still around for our pick.

The field in Atlanta is incredibly deep. There are very many really good robots that are left on the sidelines at the start of Eliminations, a very good percentage of them won one or more Regionals.

There are also many factors besides rank that figure into picks. A really good offensive team might pick a good defender because they need somebody to watch their backs or neutralize and opponent. Defenders do not tend to be ranked as highly. Other teams might want a robot that can both score and defend or possibly a not so strong scorer that can keep the opposition on the run.

An important consideration is "are they used to playing at this level?". There is a reason hat you see certain teams in the Finals over and over. Experience counts for an awful lot. An experienced team can often be a bigger factor in the Finals than a team with a "better" robot, because they know what to do with what they have.

How teams "click" is also a big factor. I know that we have scratched teams off of our list because they were so busy working on their robot they would not even talk to our strategy team, even though we were locked into the top 8 and the other team was not. Their neighbors on the other hand, were happy to talk while they tweaked. Guess who got picked?

It is not always on field performance that makes the difference
