How high will the numbers go? you think we'll hit team 911

Student on team #442, Knight Riders, from Lee High School and NASA/ BOEING/ MEVATEC.



This year the number of new team in the comp. sky rocketed more than I ever could have ever thought possible. Last year our team was a rookie (team 442) and we were one of the last teams to sign up (I think we might have hit 500 last year) but from 442 to 700s , amazing. So does anyone think we can hit team 911 or even the 1000s. That would be cool but it might bring up the discussion of qualifying at the regionals to get to the nationals.

I have this strange habit of being tied somehow to the last team to sign up each year....

If I remember correctly, we hit 591 in 2000 (I remember cause that team was from Bridgeport, CT, where I was born...so no wisecracks about Bridgeport!)

This year, the last one was #716, the Who'sCTeks from Falls Village, CT...who we mentored (they were the only rookie team to be in the finals at UTC...we know them because their high school is the same high school that our team leader graduated from)

If I remember correctly, someone put in a post about FIRST's growth rate...could someone pull that up again?

Strange... I know teams who were rookies this year with numbers in the low 500's. How did 591 get into the 2000 competition?

I should also point out, based on this method of making predictions, the number of FIRST teams will surpass the population of Earth right around 2070. Yes, this means humans will no longer be the dominant species on Earth.

Further, I have determined that in 2070, given the current pit sizes at nationals, Disney will need to expand to take up about 10% of the entire surface of the planet -- that's about the size of North and South America combined.

I do not think we will see 1000 teams for a couple years still. There were 520 or so teams this year (keep in mind that there are over 200 team #s not used that are less than 720). And if we assume growth rates like the last 6 years (somewhere between 30-45% per year), we can expect around 700-750 teams next year. If FIRST starts filling in the blanks, then we will definately not see 1000 next year (and possibly the year after), however if they leave the blanks and keep on adding on to the end, we could see 1000 next year if there is more growth than expected.
