I'm not sure what you mean. You should get one fully licensed copy of 3D Studio Max in the box they send you. When I say licensed I mean you get the hardware lock, which plugs into your parallel port, and the CD which contains the software. You also should get a serial number and a CD key with that. In order to run 3D Studio Max once it is installed, you need to have the hardware lock plugged in and the drivers for it installed which should have installed with the software. If that all works, a dialogue box should pop up either asking you to authorize your copy or enter an auth code. Without the auth code, you can run 3dsmax for 30 days, but authorization is free and its easiest if you goto https://register.autodesk.com/ to register. During the registration process it asks for your serial number (the number you needed for installation) and for your application key which should be displayed in that box that loads with 3dsmax asking for an auth code (I really don't remember its been so long). Once you fill out the online form you should get an auth code and that's all you need to do. It's free for the first copy, but if you want multiple hardware locks to run it on multiple computers you need to pay for more licenses I think.

Oh and if you do have multiple hardware locks each generates its own application key and so they each need different auth codes.

BTW, this process is similar with most AutoDesk products such as Inventor or AutoCad
