I'll forward this info to some of our other mentors, our '07 controls are just sitting on a shelf at the moment. Not sure whether we'll want to hang onto them for any future projects or not though.

I'm not sure (we were a new team for the '08 competition so we have only ever used that control system). We need to be able to program it using EasyC, and for it to work with a '08 Robot Controller.

I think we might have the 2004 control system still, I'll check and post on CD-Swap if we do. (just saw your post... hmmmm)

Re: Have an IFI control system you don't need?

Any RC from 2004 or before most likely will need some serious work to make work with EasyC (or C, for that matter).

Allow me to present a history of IFI robot controllers and the languages they used, assuming that my memory is correct:

2003: PBASIC
2004: C
2005: C
2006: C, more memory than 2005. Not sure about EasyC capability.
2007: C, EasyC
2008: C, EasyC

You want a 2007/2008 model, and 2006 might be acceptable. I'm pretty sure that anything before 2005 won't work right with EasyC.

However: You are asking for the OI. As I recall, programming that isn't an issue. I'm not even sure it takes programming! So anything from 2005 or later *should* work. Pre-2005, probably not.

Also note that IFI sells the control system components still. They are kind of pricey... over $700 for just an OI and 2 modems...

As a note, 2004's used C as well.

Re: Have an IFI control system you don't need?

easyC works on the 2004-2008 controllers.
The change in 06 was to a PIC with more memory space.

Re: Have an IFI control system you don't need?

Just as a note: If the OI doesn't take programming, any discussion on whether the RC takes EasyC or not is moot. They're asking for an OI that will work with a 2008 RC. That should be anything 2004 onwards, because that's when the IFI control system had its last major update, other than memory addition.

Does the OI take programming? Not to my knowledge.

Now if they're asking for an RC that takes EasyC, that's another story. But they aren't. If they were, they'd want 2006 onwards for the extra memory.

Re: Have an IFI control system you don't need?

Eric: I was commenting on your post so they have correct information.

As far as the OI you can use any OI 2004-2008 with the old radio's. If you need to use the 07-08 radio's then you need the 07-08 OI. Also, their is another thread about someone trying to emulate the OI for the old control system.

Re: Have an IFI control system you don't need?

Adam, I don't remember EasyC being available before about 2006-2007. I would guess that it would work on the older controllers (other than pre-2004), seeing as they're the same, other than memory capacity.

You bring up a good point about the radio modems, however, I seem to remember that the 2007-2008 model will work with the 2006 system. I may remember wrongly, though. Trying to remember just what changed other than the size and shape...

EasyC wasn't available then, but they wrote the software to be compatible with all of the 2004-2008 IFI FRC controllers.
