Sponsor Waiver of Liability?

A local business has agreed to provide shop space for our planned FRC entry next year. The company is worried about liability issues from students working on their property. Does any team have a generic waiver of liability that we can use as an example for their company's lawyers? Thanks

Re: Sponsor Waiver of Liability?

Clockert,
You should check with the school or school board. Many districts already carry insurance to cover students off campus. Be prepared, there may be some restrictions, but it doesn't cost anything to ask around. If you have traveling teams and marching bands, that is usually where you might find it.

Re: Sponsor Waiver of Liability?

There are all kinds of obscure rules about what our team can do, mainly because it's a school club, and mainly to do with insurance.

Re: Sponsor Waiver of Liability?

Our school, Windsor Connecticut Public Schools, has an insurance agreement form that we exchange with our sponsors who provide facility use and activity support. Griffin Land Development provides us with a build space for a very reasonable rent. We conduct nearly all of our activities there.

VERY IMPORTANT: We provide and document training for each student on every power tool before they are put on a list, posted on each machine, that they have received proper training in the use and safety practices of that particular tool. (Drill Press, Table Saw, etc...).
This is essential to maintain the legal liability provided in such insurance agreements.

This is another example of how FIRST trains the next generation in the practices of the professional world. In this case, insurance and legal.

Re: Sponsor Waiver of Liability?

MooreTep,

Documenting safety training is an excellent idea. I also plan on using the idea of having an approved list posted on the larger machines themselves.

Re: Sponsor Waiver of Liability?

Mr. clockert,

Sunny here. ;D.

When we were working at motorola, the county did not regulate a form but Motorola had a liability waiver form drafted and all of us signed that.

PM me for a copy of the form, although there might copyright issues, you could use the form for a basic idea of what to draft up. Since robotics itself is considered a school activity, all of the rules of school and stuff automatically carry over. . But I'm sure you already knew that.

Let me know and I'll get you the hook up.
