in search of Prescription safety glasses

College Student on team #192, Gunn Robotics Team, from Henry M. Gunn Senior High School.

As a lot of you know, I normally have to wear glasses where ever I go, when ever I go. It wasn't a big problem until I went into the UC Berkeley machine shop.

One day my friend and I went to the machine shop to check out the place, and on the way there I told my friend how I use my normal glasses as safety glasses in my old high school machine shop. Then when we got into the shop, a lady suddenly came up to us and said, "Wear safety glasses or get out!" At the time, my friend had his on, so I was panicing because I don't have mine.

Some how my friend misunderstood me and told the lady, "oh he is wearing prescription safety glasses." And the lady stared at me for 10 minutes and said "you sure those are xxx-xxxx certified safety glasses~?!?!" I had to keep noding my head over 50 times trying to convince her because I want to see the shop. She left us alone, but kept staring at me with a questioning face...

Now I got to find myself prescription safety glasses if I want to work in that shop, because I absolutly cannot stand the huge ones that have to fit over my own glasses.

So, does anyone know any place where I can get those? I am not necessary looking for specific places, because I am over here at west coast. I just need advice about how and where to look for prescription glasses.

Thanks for reading this!

I just ran a search on google, so any of the engineers especially would probably know better than me, but I found this company in the Northwest that says they can make them. I put the link below for you.

Ken,

I totally symapthize as I'm in the same boat. Any reputable optician should be able to help you. And yes safety glasses do meet a different standard than regular glasses.

Though regular glasses will stop minor machining chips, they won't stop a busted bit for example. Also safety glass lenses are actually either plastic or a form of safety glass. Meaning that if you do manage to break them the pieces are squareish rather than needle sharp shards.

The standard stamped on mine is ANSI Z87. They are typically available with and without side sheilds. While the side sheilds are less than stylish, I recommend them. If nothing else they make the glasses LOOK official and so end the hassle factor.

Unfortunately for you, mine are provided by my employer, so I just hand them the perscription and wait a few weeks. I have no idea other than the name "Titmus" molded in the bows where they came from. If you still need references I can ask when the opticians come in again in a week or two.
