Re: How does your team find work space?

Only until they can successfully have it thawed.

1793 is lucky enough to have a principal that is at least 100% behind the team from the very beginning, and based at a school with a fabrication room off in a corner connected to the computer tech room. Fabrication room, not shop. We don't have any heavy machinery, but we do have Ed, our mentor and connection to the BAE Shipyard.

Re: How does your team find work space?

Nah, I think it's kept in the fridge that's a room or two over from the freezer.

Or it might be in the freezer... depends what it is.

Then again, it might be in one of the programming rooms or upstairs in the loft area.

Re: How does your team find work space?

461 has its own tech shop which is our teacher's and main mentor's classroom... it's actually 2 rather large rooms, one a shop with all the tools, the other - a classroom with white boards, seating, etc, which is also a computer lab for the classes he teaches... the shop has an exit to the outside where one of his classes built a shed to store old robots and such in... also, we have rented space to use for practice fields in the past, used our local elementary school's gym, and our high school gyms also... you can always ask the other teams in the area for help also. we've provided space for other teams in the past (and still do) and let them use our shop and other facilities for free

Re: How does your team find work space?

Thanks for all the replies, information, and support! Sorry I'm late in replying.

The presentation seemed to go very well with a great reaction from our Board of Education. Hopefully we'll be able to get some more support.

Thanks again everyone for all the replies, hearing how teams work things out with mentors, communities, schools, and sponsors is a really great thing to hear. Thanks for sharing!

On Exploding Bacon the mentors draw straws for who's garage we'll be working in. College mentors who rent homes have to draw 2 straws.

Re: How does your team find work space?

During the lunacy year. We worked in a computer engineering room it was a pain to put everything away at nite. After some good negotiation on our mentors part, we now have a small room. Its not the largest but its great for programing and storage. we also have a sponsor that teaches machining so we have access to the machines.

Re: How does your team find work space?

1618 has always built out of the PLTW classroom, itself a converted wood shop. The actual shop space has been greatly reduced from its prior form, but there's plenty of space to spread out while working.

This season, 2815 built out of the student projects room in USC's College of Engineering and Computing machine shop. The room is just down the hall from the actual machine shop and is shared with the other competition teams in the college (Mini Baja, Solar Boat, etc.). After build, we moved everything back into Steven Kowski's lab across the street to make space for the next project in the room.

Re: How does your team find work space?

Team 675 has always had a problem of not having enough storage room/workspace because we have a very small shop. We have 2 large rafters in the shop that we use to store materials and items that we rarely use. We had an old shipping crate outside the school. We also got 2 5'X10' storage units donated to us to store some of our stuff, such as the shipping crate and old wood shop tools we are unable to get rid of. We have been keeping our this past season's robot in the teacher's storage room.

Hopefully by getting things stored you are able to make more storage room!

Re: How does your team find work space?

781 has the use of half of the school basement for storage of old robots, materials, and tools. We also have a portable clasroom set up as our shop, with drill presses, saws, etc. This portable classroom works very well, because we can work outside of school hours and on weekends when the school is closed.
