Clothes that are easy to move in are best, obviously, and if you're going to wear a skirt, make sure it's 'flowy' and not constricting. Wear comfortable shoes Dancing beats up your feet. Avoid sneakers, though, 'cause the rubber soles and the dance floor aren't exactly the best of friends. It'll just make moving harder.

That's my advice as a frequent bystander, and much more infrequently actual dancer. Maybe if life works itself out, I'll take Beginner Social Dance one semester. . . maybe not

Ballroom dancing folks are cool, generally, so, score one point each for you two
I'll make Michael take the ballroom class when I TA it. Michael thinks balroom dancing folks are cool 'cause I've made him hang out with us on way too many occasions.

As far as what to wear, I would suggest not a skirt for the first time, flowing or not. Wear jeans or shorts, something comfortable. A skirt could very easily lead to embarassing moments if you're just beginning. Though, Michael's right, don't wear something with a rubber sole. It'll make turning much harder and tends to make you trip more. Though, if you wear hard sole shoes, you run the risk of slipping and falling. So, the choice is yours.

I'll be teaching a couple of swing classes this summer and during the school year. But anyway, that's what I learned from the past 2 years of dancing. I know it's a bite late, but I hope it helps for the future.
