Re: girls: what's the lamest pickup line u've got from a guy at robotics comp?

As i have already posted three or four times with bad pick up lines, sometimes the best thing that works is just talking to us like we arent a different kind fo creature. We are just girls and usually we are more than willing to talk to you if you talk to us normally and put away the pick up lines. Thats how I have kept a bunch of good robotics friends.

Re: girls: what's the lamest pickup line u've got from a guy at robotics comp?

I've been married since *cough* and pray that I never need to have a "pickup line" ever again. I don't pretend to be an expert. I would think that, given the people and place involved, the best line would be, "Hey, cool robot. Can you tell me about how it works?"

I swear, youth is wasted on young men...

I'd second that.

That's the advice I give to all of the new kids on the team. It seems like it works.

Re: girls: what's the lamest pickup line u've got from a guy at robotics comp?

This thread is too fun to die. I'll revive it with the best pick-up line I've ever used. Guys, are you listening? This one involves a digital multimeter.

1. Walk up to the girl with the multimeter and say, "hey, want to see my second favorite way to use a multimeter?"
2. Girl should reply, "sure."
3. Have her hold one probe in her left hand and you hold one probe in your right. Set the multimeter to resistance mode (2 Mohm range if manual ranging).
4. Ask her to hold your hand and talk about how cool it is when the resistance number goes down.

At this point, you've already gotten her to hold you hand, but if you'd like to continue:

5. Say, "and that's my second favorite way to use a multimeter."
6. Girl should ask, "what's your first favorite way to use a multimeter?"
7. Respond, "showing you my second favorite way to use a multimeter."

And that should do it. I've tested this one, and it works. And you have to admit, it is a pretty clever way to use a multimeter.

Alternatively, if you're feeling really ambitious, after step four, when you're each holding one probe and she holds your hand and the resistance reading drops, say, "see, you cannot resist!" Disclaimer: I have not tested that one.

Ultra-disclaimer: Entire above post is all in good fun. Girls: please do not hate me.

Re: girls: what's the lamest pickup line u've got from a guy at robotics comp?

I honestly don't see who has time to try and "pick up" girls at robotics. I'm so busy and hyper at events that if I see someone I'm attracted to or if I'm getting along with well in conversation, I'll think "hey, maybe I should get her Facebook / number / whatever" several hours after the fact... Robotics is really the only place where I'm distracted from girls.

On the rare occasion I can't stop thinking about someone cool I just met at a comp, I just go talk to them again really, like a normal person. Don't let this dissuade you from using terrible pickup lines; after all this is one of my favorite CD threads

If you find your quotes sprinkled throughout this thread, I am happy to give advice on how to avoid that fate

Re: girls: what's the lamest pickup line u've got from a guy at robotics comp?

ok this isnt really a pick up line but w.e. so me and my friend lauren were sitting on the bleachers at a comp. scouting and the HOT team was sitting nxt to us and their macot mitchell kept lookin at us.. so once he looked at us and then came over and started talking to us and was like michelle and lauren do u want a pin??? were like sure..... he walked away and we both looked at each other and were like how the heck does he kno or names.... and since im the mascot for our team he keep like following me and lauren around every where we went.... then we just started talking to our friends on RUSH and he left us alone and every comp. after that hed just either stare at us or start talking to us and were like what the heck... It was very weird thing.....

I must admit, i used that to get one of my friends and a few people that i ran into to laugh. (not to get numbers) They thought it was funny then some of them asked ME for my number and i gave it to them. Guess people really like seeing how low they can get the resistance.

Well this is not really from a regional but it's something that happened recently.

Too fantastic. Though most of those of the male persuasion that we encounter at competition arent quite as... "suave" shall we say? I distinctly remember being hit on repeatedly by guys in the most obvious and awkward manners. Boys, if it's a girl you seek, be genuine and comfortable.

Last year, my favorite "hit-on" quote was as follows: "Blarglefish will spare you!"

Poor guy.

Re: girls: what's the lamest pickup line u've got from a guy at robotics comp?

LOL. This thread is epic! I have WAY too many stories.

SVR two years ago (my first year) a girlfriend and I were hanging out in our pits. A guy from another team walks up to us, and we begin chatting. Looking at his team shirt, I say, "Oh, you're from team ****?"
My friend jokingly says, "No, he's a spy pretending that he's from that team."
The guy responds: "That's right. I'm here to steal your parts. What's your most valuable part?"
My friend awkwardly says, "Well, duh! We are!"
The guy doesn't think before he delivers this line: "Oh, well, I couldn't fit both of you girls under my shirt at once."
At this point, we can't help but laugh. Poor guy turns bright red and runs off.

Then last year @ SVR... one of my friends from another team introduces me to a boy from an all boy's team, who I happened to be Facebook friends with for some reason. My friend insinuates very poorly that said all boy's team guy has a thing for me. All boy's team dude ends up asking me for my number, then texts me as we're about to leave, telling me that my team forgot our label maker in the pits, which I distinctly remember packing. We aren't sure whether he stole it to get me to go back to the pits or if we honestly forgot it. Regardless, we sent our team captain to the pits to retrieve the label maker.

Last year's Sacramento Regional has got to be the worst tournament I've been to in terms of bad flirting. While leaving the stands, the guy sitting behind me asks for a high five. I gave it to him, and asked, "Why?" His response, complete with stereotypical nerd/creep accent: "Cuth you're pwetty." Later when I was in the stands, I felt a tap on my shoulder. Same guy. "I made thith for you!" He was holding out some sort of beaded thing. "Why????" "CUTH YOU'RE PWETTY!" I told him I had a boyfriend (not true, but it's a kinder rejection than "NO") and he asked me to take it anyways. After he left, I gave it to the team captain to get rid of (thank you team captain :D). It's been almost a year and people on my team still make fun of me for that...

Oh, and then at the same regional, I saw a water bottle hanging on a string from the hands, so, being naturally inquisitive, pulled on it. Two guys lean over the stands to look down at me and exclaim "Wow! We caught a pretty one!"

And there's the time (same regional) when someone who looked like a freshman told me and my friend that we were "as sexy as chocolate strawberries." Cute.

Also, not my own story, but one of my girl friends said she got asked for her number at SVR one year and then SVR the year after by the same guy. D:

Sorry for the long post, I just had too much to share. Hope this made someone laugh.

tl;dr Girl gets hit on at robotics and hilarity ensues.

Re: girls: what's the lamest pickup line u've got from a guy at robotics comp?

I don't have a regional story to post, but this did remind me of a funny story a friend told me.

One time he was getting a tour of RPI. At one point they mentioned the male/female ratios and how there's a lot less girls. Just then a girl walks by, two men jump out of the bushes, cry "THERE'S ONE" and run off.

Obviously staged, but it's still amazing.

You will find some stories. After all FIRST partly about the social interactions between people so you are bound to find one eventually (I am a freshman so don't hold my opinions with absolute certainty.) Our dear Mike gave an autograph to a shy fan of his. I don't think we will ever let him forget about this when he mentors.
