Regional CAD award, not software specific. There is a lot of brilliant design work that goes relatively unrewarded on the local level.

I agree with that. There is a tremendous amount of CAD work that goes into Robots that does not get mentioned.

Re: What Awards would you like to see?

I don't think there is anything wrong with saying that there should be some award for that stuff Dan.

What I would like to see:
-1st seed(kinda)
-High score (goes to the members of the alliance with the high score of the weekend)
-Play of the Day
-Mad driving skills.(this is something I have thought of for a while, an award given to the team whose drive team has guess what, mad skills.)

My$0.02

Re: What Awards would you like to see?

REGIONAL CAD!

This above all else is a gaping hole in the current awards structure, in my opinion. The students spend too much time designing and CADing their robot to not get more recognition.

Perhaps some emails and letters are in order.

Definitely regional CAD awards. Too bad we wouldn't be able to submit in Solidworks though. >.<

See that bites, I understand that Inventor sponsors FIRST and their is a National Inventor Award. Maybe at the regional level it can be any piece of software? IDK how FIRST would take it, but man, CAD is a HUGE portion of Building the robot.

Well, I would love to start the chain of sending emails. Anyone else down?

Re: What Awards would you like to see?

Well.. Inventor opens SolidWorks files... In theory couldn't you just resave them in Inventor? Then again... That's not waht they are wanting..

You could always have local just any CAD program, sense they aren't there anyway, and National Inventor only... Still not fair though..

Definitely Regional CAD.
It's an activity closely tied to the Engineering process that goes largely unrewarded or encouraged. 1600 teams waiting all year to possibly be in the Final 5 at the Championship is a discouraging prospect for kids that busted their tails making incredibly detailed layouts.
You could argue that the reward should be in the finished product (and it is for the most part) but that could be said about every other award we strive to win in FIRST.
Lets give these kids doing CAD something local to shoot for.

I completely agree. There are not enough CAD awards. There are a lot of teams that do really good stuff and don't get recognized. A regional CAD award would get a lot more teams competitive about CAD. The Regional level could be peer judged.

I talked to one of the judges last year. The reason they want inventor is that they can see what was done with the CAD. The few teams that have the extra software can use that, but if you want national recognition, do everything in inventor. Everything not made in inventor is against you. He also said that every year they work on inventor they are striving for the same level as other softwares. Also they are changing some stuff this year. Project files are required if i remember right. They will make a file structure for the submission, so they can know where everything is at.

Re: What Awards would you like to see?

I love the idea of more chances to recieve a trophy from FIRST, but most of these awards are peer awards that teams give to eachother anyways. Like the "best scorer" and "best play of the day".

I do like, though, the idea for teams to send a representative down to recieve certain awards... I'm glad your team won it, but when your team tends to be over 30 people (ahem, 111), it can get long.

or 20. I think there was about 70+ students who came down to the field.

I'm sure that FIRST could come out with some creative way to distribute awards if it got too big. Like just announcing the team name and number and then the trophy would be given to the team in the pits afterwords. This of course would only be for smaller/minorish awards.
