Is the fact that you just used three trailing dots instead of your normal one trailing dot a game hint, Dave?

I think you're on to something, Eric: dlavery replaced two returns with two dots in his last post!

Not to bump an old thread but we are quickly coming up to the part of the season that some of us dread, Game Hint Season. I can't speak for everyone but I know that one of my personal reasons for hating this time of the season is the rash of semi-literate posts that seem to appear on here. So I am going to try to make a quick checklist for people posting.
  1. Did you read the thread?
  2. All of the thread?
  3. Really? The whole thread?
  4. Write your post.
  5. Did you hit the preview button at least once?
  6. Did you proofread your post?
  7. Go back and proofread it once more time.
  8. Hit Submit
  9. Read what was posted just to make sure.
  10. Fix any mistakes.

Just keep in mind that if you take the time to put forth an effort to communicate clearly most people will respect what you have to say more than if you communicate in an ineffective manner. It doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to be a good faith effort.

Hopefully we can avoid threads where the first two pages are repeated for 500+ posts.

There's some great advice here that is beneficial to everyone, Andrew.Thank you.

Some of the other reasons that make the busy hint season (and beyond) a little chaotic on CD is because of the way seasoned posters respond to the posts they find annoying.

Here's a couple of suggestions for that side of the coin:

- read the whole thread
- read and re-read the post you are making in response to a post you are about to critique, criticize, lambast, or use sarcasm with
- consider your options. Has something already been said to address the shortcomings of the post and would yours just pile on? Is that necessary or needed?
- are you responding in an obnoxious or rude manner or are you leading by example as to how you would like posts in CD to be made: well written, thoughtful, and contributing to the discussion?
- refrain from using the red rep option, especially if the poster is a new member to the CD community and is not intentionally trying to create a problem or flame anyone/anything
- take a break away from the computer to get some fresh air and cool your jets when repetitions and other annoyances occur
- keep it all in perspective
- hold on to your sense of humor and don't let go

Learning to communicate well is some of the hardest fun we'll ever have. I wouldn't be surprised if that isn't a major facet of the Woodie Flowers Award: technical communication and communication in general. We can do searches for some of our WFAs that have posted in CD and some of our WFFAs that have posted in CD as well. Many of them mentor here beautifully with their humor, their thoughtful posts, their restraint, and their wisdom.

Just a thought.

I would like to take a second to mention the red rep option for new members, Is there any way we can have rep get reset at 20 posts so that if a new person comes on and makes some honest mistakes (and we as a community ream them out for it) we can give them a second chance? Still have them earn positive or negative rep in that time but if it is very negative reset it so they can start out fresh hopefully realizing their mistake. (By the way, don't make the mistake I made and look through the user list sorted by ascending Rep, looking at some of the posts I am in shock and mildly appalled)

The next 3 points, The Game is a game, an opinion is an opinion and we would all do well to respect each other because in May the game is done, whoever wins won, and we all still have to put up with each other.

Step 10 Look at a lot of Jane's posts, she edits a good number, as do quite a few people. Sometimes it isn't until you posted and came back to read a reply that you notice a typo.

I don't find it ironic at all. Rather, it is perfectly supportive of the entire thread. I am encouraged by such behavior. It is a wonderful example of someone who cares enough about clear, concise, and correct communication that she is willing to check her own work and correct her own mistakes. Where most might never bother to review a post after the initial entry, Jane exhibited appropriate discipline in validating that what was posted was equivalent to what was intended. Many of us can learn from her example.

I average between 5 and 10 edits per post and I wish the edit button was a little pillow that I could squeeze gratefully. Even though I preview my typing several times - my eyes see what they want to see. When I leave the post and return to it then many of the mistakes are glaring. Not all of them but I can catch a few, sometimes. I am also notorious for writing run-on sentences. It's just awful - my English teachers and professors loved grading my essays. With.red.pens.
Yup.

Edit: I didn't see Dave's post. Thank you, Two-Dot-Dave.

Also somewhat related to this topic, logical debates. For reference the following is not logical.
Quote:

"Jane" is trying to discredit "John's" opinion by discrediting him, regardless of if John is indeed a poopy head his opinion's validity does not change.

I also feel I must give credit to Karthik for this topic though. Once again, in my meandering of old threads I found a discussion that interested me. At one point he posted http://www.nizkor.org/features/fallacies/ and I, being naturally inquisitive, clicked it. It made me happy, not only does it have some interesting topics but also has some pretty funny examples.

But I could have quite possibly misunderstood the irony - although - the ironic part of that is that a whole new thread has now been started regarding a game hint by oh, hm - who could it be? Oh, yes, you - the mind mapper guy. Which ended up being a good thing because I learned what a wicked problem is, which I knew already but didn't know I knew. You know what I'm sayin' ?
