Welcome to the community!
As a new member of a new team, I'd recommend pointing you toward these documents. Simbotics is a great team that puts out these invaluable training materials. If you'd like to get familiar with FIRST documents before kick off, you can go here to find archived game documents. thebluealliance.net is a great place to look up game videos of robots you might hear mentioned on CD. The FIRST Workshops here are pretty good too. The ones I like are JVN's - Applying the Engineering Design Process to Competition Robots and Bill Beatty's - Overall FRC Robot Design and Strategy.
