Re: Web Competitors 2010

What about public computers that don't have flash or not the correct version installed? Having it as your WHOLE site is a little risky, as computers are getting weaker and weaker (netbooks) and some can't handle flash well. But like andrew said, i like your site, just i dont like the way its delivered

Here's our site from last year. We plan to revamp it to some extent.

http://www.walpolerobotics.org

I know there are some compatibility issues but any advice would be appreciated.

At the top of your site your main body comment is showing on the page. Just a quick heads up.

The install base of Flash is not insignificant, and was large enough to warrant taking the risk. In case Flash is not available, the site will offer a mobile version that contains the same content minus videos and high bandwidth media. Performance testing (mainly looking up the site on a junk computer) has yielded positive results with tolerable performance overhead.

Remember that optimizing performance and accessibility was one of the main goals. If I couldn't do that, I would never have touched Flash.

As Firefox is the most standards compliant browser out there, your code should be optimized to work in it.

Code:
<!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="head" --><!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
<!-------- MainBody -->
Your HTML code appears to have the comment written with the characters for less than and greater than rather than the actual < and > symbols, hence why it displays on the page. The comments above are properly formatted. Perhaps your CMS is automatically converting said symbols?

However, with new emerging platforms like HTML 5 and integrated video, I do hope it will be replaced eventually. Who knows what my team can come up with? I have faith!
Billy, let me start off by saying that I have had Flash experience since 12 years of age and that you're way past calling yourself just "competent." Even though I have Flash experience, it would have taken we a long time to develop what you have developed there.

As soon as I saw the site, I immediately thought about HTML5 and CSS3. With all that new web standards will offer for us, I think that whole site can be done with just HTML5 and CSS3 for markup/style. However, that's a whole another time to worry about.

As much as I hate incompetent flash websites, sometimes, sites like yours are a real treat to come across sometimes. Keep up the AWESOME work. Just keep in mind that everything has its context and everything has its reasons. Some sites are meant to be implemented through standards and others not so much. Perhaps robotics site in flash wasn't the best idea, but as it stands, I don't think it's a problem that you did it in flash.
