Check the digital I/O pins to make sure none are shorted. If one got bent and the 5 volt lead is shorted to ground the DS will not boot.

they appear to be in the right place, and they arent bent. any other ideas?

Next thing might be a loose power connection. Other than that I would reflash the DS unit.
