Linux views

Okay...that PC vs Mac thing got me thinking. What is stopping people here from at least trying linux?

I know people say that software is limited. It's not. Really. It's actually nicer I'm logged into AIM, MSN, and Yahoo all in one program. My browser is incredibly fast and has a nice MDI view. There is peer-to-peer software. And playing a nice bout of quake 3 is always a nice way to start the day in linux.

Hardware support is also a factor. Some hardware can be hard to set up, but using utilities included in RedHat or Mandrake, just about anything can be set up. Most drivers will be third-party drivers made by some German guy who knows how to reverse-engineer but that's alright! Some corporations are even beginning to support linux. Take a look at HP and NVidia. Many other companies use standards like USB mass storage.

Command line? Not neccisarily. It is possible to escape most of the command line woes. Many utilities have been created to help the user get away from the command line.

I'd like to know who has switched to linux and why. Also, why WONT people switch to linux. Lastly, what would make you switch to linux?

i have actually made my own linux file server in hopes of learning linux. i got samba up and running, and then i forgot all the commands cause i'm a moron. so now, i leave the linux computer on all the time (it's been up for a long time now, i can't remember when i last shut it off). the only problem i have is that i don't know any linux commands or anything about the GUIs. if i knew more, it would be easier for me, but i don't. i do want to learn, i'm just to lazy .

I'm running Windows2000 on my main box, but I have another box running Debian/unstable. I use it mostly as a fileserver, but it's not limited to that kind of usage. I really like Linux, and would eventually like to switch over, completely.

Why I haven't yet confuses me...

I ran Redhat for quite a while, espically when I was at school. But the only reason I don't run it now is that there is no linux driver for the sound blaster audigy, and I don't want to replace that card. That and Warcraft 3 won't run in linux either

Dispite what the Open Source Software zelots (mostly of the GNU type) would have you believe... Linux is not for everyone.

Yes, it makes a good server.
Yes, in a number of cases it makes a good workstation.
NO, it will NOT replace Windows/Any Other OS

I run Debian "GNU/Linux" ('Testing', for those that care). I also run Windows 2000 inside Linux under VMWare. It works for most of my needs.

Video Editing on Linux? HAH, right...
CAD on Linux? A few non-free applications...

There are just some things that Linux won't be able to do for a very long time. It's a cool OS, but that doesn't mean that everyone should run it.

And here I though that there was no video editing apps for linux...

(Wow...what a simple google search will turn up )

Also, I'm no linux evangalist. I just think that people get a false idea of what Linux actually is. Most people I talk to about it think that it's some complicated, unusable, uber-OS. Maybe Slackware and Debian could be considered unusable for some people, things like Mandrake install easier than Windows. There's also a whole mess of CAD programs that are open source

Oh yeah...Professional corporate video editing software: http://www.mainconcept.com/

Took it off for vacation because there is no support for my digi cam. Will put debain back on it when I get a chance/bored.

heres a plain and simple answer as to why i dont use linux... i tried it and i guess i thought it was cool having linux cause none of my friends had linux, but the thing was... i have no clue how to use linux. i learned a few simple commands but for the average user thats used to using gui interfaces and isnt completely familiar with all the commands it just ends up being very frustrating. now i have heard that lindows is pretty nice... i have yet to try it out.

anyone know anything about lindows? ive never seen it ive just heard rumors about it.

i didnt switch to linux cause warcraft3 doesnt work on linux

I like FreeBSD.

It runs natd to control my network.

I like to run it every once in a while on my workstation, but then I get bored with it after about a month.

I'm liking OSX alot, thanks to some people at work.

Woo.

Ohh...and Lindows = Eww

I believe it's just a crappy linux distribution which broke WINE's GPU (as I don't think that Lindows released it's modified source for WINE).

Way back in the day, when OS X was new stuff, there were a few petition sites for porting it to x86...

You can get Darwin for x86, but alas, no real OS X.

I'm not too fond of the operating system myself, but anything that inspires competition between Apple and Microsoft is cool with me...
