Team662 has used motor couplings in the past. We designed a gearbox using stem pinion gears and used a coupling to connect it to a CIM. We used a flexible shaft coupling from McMaster Carr. The coupling prevented the gearbox from binding since we were not able to machine the gearbox with great precision. Check out this link from the McMaster Carr catalog:
