Agreed. AutoCad is for 2D sketching, but does not really have the ease of workflow for 3D modeling that Inventor provides.
From my knowledge though, Im pretty sure both Inventor and AutoCAD will open .stp files. You need to change the file type in the "Open" window to STEP or .stp. My advice is that once you open the file, save it as a format your comfortable with.
So perhaps those that are so eager to complain might realize that if they spent a little less time complaining and a little more time analyzing the problem and developing solutions, then they might have a little less to complain about. - dlavery [more]
