As for metal, I went to see Between the Buried and Me last Saturday, and everyone who played was fantastic.

Scale the Summit is more prog than metal, but the Devin Townsend Project made me feel ashamed I wasn't more familiar with Devin Townsend, the genius that he is. Cynic was phenomenal. I actually lost a shoe in their pit, but I got my remaining shoe signed by all 4 members of the band after the show!

I may be a bit biased, seeing as BTBAM is my favorite band, but they were incredible as well.

Lamb of God is definitely less mainstream than Slipknot or Disturbed, though they are hardly an underground band. But, for that matter, we really haven't seen many underground bands mentioned in this thread at all. LoG really isn't any more mainstream than Dream Theater.

And I wasn't saying that 2008 was a particularly bad year for metal, but it wasn't particularly great, either. 2001, 2004, 2007, and 2009 all certainly had a higher quantity of very high quality releases. Most other years in the 2000s were on-par with 2008.

Personally as an avid music listener, I wouldn't consider a single band you listed to be metal (save perhaps Disturbed). Nor is BTBAM.

There's a difference between metal-influenced (post)hardcore and metal. Many of these post-hardcore/"screamo" (albeit they're not actually screamo, either)/quasi-metalcore bands like Underoath, The Devil Wears Prada, and August Burns Red are primarily like 2000s-era post-hardcore music, with some metal elements thrown in. Strained screams, breakdowns, two-step beats, and dissonant melodies are not metal characteristics, but rather decend from hardcore punk.

This thread is sorely lacking in appreciation for black metal. Someone out there has to love Wolves in the Throne Room, Darkthrone, or Blut aus Nord. And High on Fire is as close as we've come to mentioning doom metal. Where's the love for Pentagram, Electric Wizard, and Coffins?

Lamb of God is a solid one. I'm also a fan of Dimmu Borgir, and for the times when I feel like throwing on a Kilt and going on a rampage, Eluveitie is some solid stuff.

Doom/Stoner metal is amazing, bands like Sleep, Electric Wizard, Witchcraft, Kyuss and Witchfinder General are great. High on Fire introduced me to doom/stoner, and the genre has failed to dissappoint.

On another note, who here listens to Bolt Thower? While more original and brutal bands exist, they have some of the best cover artwork ever, about as over-the-top as Man O War.

If you like stoner doom, check out sHEAVY, Black Pyramid, Serpent Throne, Harvey Milk, Acid King, The Sword, War Pigs, Earth, and Torche. For "doomier" doom, you can always go with St. Vitus, Pentagram, Trouble, Candlemass, or Jex Thoth.

I do enjoy Bolt Thrower, but it's another band I'm guilty of not listening to as often as I should.

Anyways, gonna go see Slayer/Megadeth/Testament in a week or so. Should be an awesome show.

I saw High on Fire play with Converge, Mastodon, and Dethklok back this fall. That was an awesome show. I definitely need to listen to more High on Fire.

To whoever mentioned Scale the Summit: Yes, they're more progressive than metal. I saw them with Dream Theater back in August, and they were incredibly impressive (all bands there were. Dweezil Zappa was by far the greatest performance there, even though I came for Dream Theater).


Also, if anybody wants to extend doom into drone, I'm currently writing a music paper involving the band Sunn 0))). If you have the patience, they really are fantastic to listen to.

Although maybe not technically metal, does anybody listen to straight up grindcore? Napalm Death, Pig Destroyer, etc?

Sunn 0))) is good, but I extend my atmosphere out to the likes of Isis, Cult of Luna, Rosetta and Nuerosis.

Listening to more High on Fire is always a good idea.

I always thought Sunn 0))) was decent, but a little hard to listen to. However, if you haven't listened to their newest album (Monoliths and Dimensions) I seriously suggest it. It's not as absolutely doom-y as their past stuff, but it has so much more in terms of layering and interesting instrumental pieces (while still maintaining the drone-style).


On a more classic-rock-proto-metal note, I maintain that the intro riff to Godzilla by Blue Oyster cult is one of the heaviest riffs ever. And that takes into account all the extreme metal I listen to.

If you want riffage, listen to the Sword, that's all they do, and they do it well.

High on Fire, having mentioned them, do some great riffing.

Electric Wizard still dominates the riff department with Dopethrone though.

Yeah, I've listened to the Sword. They aren't my favorite, but I certainly respect what they do. High on Fire is fantastic when it comes to sludgey riffs. My favorite Band is Queens of the Stone Age, and while not metal, they certainly do have some good guitar parts. I haven't listened to Electric Wizard, although I have heard the name.

In general I'm a big fan of classic metal riffs. Listen to the Bass intro of Space Truckin' by Deep Purple, or Sweet Leaf by Black Sabbath.

As I said, I love pretty much all types of metal, from that which can barely be called more than hard rock to this (http://www.myspace.com/terrorhorse).

I lost major interest in the Behemoth tour when Shining dropped off due to visa complications. Lightning Swords of Death replaced them, and while I like LSoD a lot, they aren't nearly as awesome as Shining. I ended up skipping it to see Oiltanker and Infernal Stronghold instead.
