Bumpers!

Ok I'm currently working on a proposal to send to a local company about having the 1000 denier nylon/cordua fabric in a "kit" of sorts for a lower cost.

So I want to know how much your team pays normally to order or get ahold of this fabric so I can figure out a good price to put in my proposal. Also if you know how much fabric you normally use to cover your bumpers I would love to have that number too. I'm just trying to get some specs from teams other than my own.

Thanks so much!

Re: Bumpers!

We use what we can get locally which is a heavy duty canvas however we would much prefer the cordura though. We usually get about 5 yards of canvas to make our bumpers at a cost of $7.50 - $9 per yard. So for material we spend approximately $40.00 (if you average it at $8.00)

Re: Bumpers!

This year we purchased the material that FIRST "suggested", I seriously doubt we will do that again. It cost us $69.00 for 2 yards of the red and 2 of the blue. It also took 2 weeks to get it. I could have and have in the past bought similar material for 1/3 of the price. Every year our inspectors tell us we have some of the best bumpers at the competition.

Re: Bumpers!

Would a heavy duty canvas be okay to use should we use a rip-stop nylon fabric?

We are trying to decide if we would get the 1000 denier cordura plus i time to ship our bumpers with the robot.

Re: Bumpers!

We bought the AM red skirt. I received some Blue boat canvas material donated and white vinyl for the numbers. This blue material is actually better then cordura and will allow the robot to slide easier on the lexan side rails of the field or other robots. I am excited.

Also, all you really need is 1 yard per color if you are making two sets of bumpers, maybe an additional yard if you are making a skirt.

Re: Bumpers!

Red and blue "duck cloth" at $7.49 a yard from Joann Fabrics. Two yards of each color. While you are there, pick up white 4-inch iron on athletic jersey numbers. Two full sets of 0-9 digits with multiple copies of each digit for $4.00 a set. Entire investment for the bumper fabric and numbers: less than $40.

Rip stop nylon is pretty thin, at least what I have encountered. Cordura is the heavy stuff they make into backpacks for example. In other words, think "heavy denim" and not "bedsheet". Although you can be successful with most any heavy fabric, the cordura is almost indestructable, and 1000 denier is really thick stuff.
