Position of the balls and the robot

Before the match starts, are the balls going to be on the field and are we allowed to put our robot in any direction or any position?

Please read <G08> in the game manual.

Re: Position of the balls and the robot

cilginbilgin, this is discussed in the FRC manual 07_The Game.pdf or in the same section of the complete PDF file. <G07> and <G08> refer to specific rules about your question.

Normally in these forums, someone asking a simple question is admonished because the answer or explanation is already available in the rules documents. Posts here that have already been discussed in other threads are also discouraged. However, in cilginbilgin's case I think we can cut him some slack due to his nationality. He obviously knows more English than I do Turkish. I doubt very much that I would even consider reading 150 pages of Turkish for anything other than life-saving instructions. He and his team have come quite a ways so far if they recognize that they need to know where the robot and ball start the game. I hope my team is thinking about that stuff too.

Bill,

Keeping an answer short and to the point is not an admonishment. In fact, your reply is more confusing than mine. Do you believe that a foreign speaker would be able to read your reply without a bilingual dictionary?

I mentor two classes of students for which English is a second language. Until they ask a question such as, "Where is <G08>?" or "I still do not understand", the manual, with its associated diagrams and pictures, may be the easiest path to understanding.

Regards,

Mike

Re: Position of the balls and the robot

Your reply is right on target, Mike. I was initially trying to forestall others from jumping on the OP's case about reading the manual. I'm sorry that it looks like I was criticizing Mike, when I was trying to address a larger readership. Oh, and good point about trying to explain C.D. in words of one syllable. I've got to dust off the thesaurus real soon now.

Re: Position of the balls and the robot

Mike and Bill, while they're at it, they should also read <G09> specifically, and all of Section 7.3.4.1 in general. This should answer any and all questions they have about starting positions.

Re: Position of the balls and the robot

It is a bit unclear.

Quote:
<G09> BALL Starting Positions – Prior to the MATCH, each ALLIANCE is provided with six BALLS to be placed on the FIELD. The BALLS must be placed on a STARTING GRID location prior to the MATCH start. When the FIELD is viewed from the ALLIANCE STATION, the BALLS must be placed on the right side of the CENTER LINE, with one BALL in the near ZONE, two BALLS in the MIDFIELD, and three BALLS in the far ZONE. The BALLS must not be in contact with a ROBOT at the start of the MATCH.
(emphasis mine)

The ALLIANCE will be given the BALLS, and they place them on the STARTING GRID locations of their choice.

The rule says that each ALLIANCE places the balls on the field.

The referee does NOT place the balls.

The wording is hard to understand.
