Official Competition Announcement & Sign Up Information!

Here is some exciting information about this year's competition:

This year we will be using an exciting new kit of parts featuring the IFI
Robot Prototyping Kit by Innovation First. Our kit will include many motors,
sensors, sprockets and gears not found in the basic kit to make building fun
and easy. This expanded custom kit will have a miniature version of the
Innovation First control system with all the same features and programming
capability. There are parts enough for you to build two robots that will be
a maximum size of 16" X 16" x 16".

Using the full remote capability of the Innovation system your drivers will
be using play station style joystick controls.

Here is the exciting news:

A "Team" will make TWO robots for a game that will be played Two robots vs.
Two robots. Yes that right. Your team is the "alliance" the entire
competition. But wait! There is more.......You have a choice of three
OPTIONS for the competition this year.

Option #1.
Your team builds both robots. This means you design, build and drive them
the entire competition. Your team pays the full entry fee. The entry fee is
$800.00

Option #2.
You form an "alliance " with another FIRST Team and share the kit of parts
to build the two robots. You STAY an alliance the entire competition. You
split the entry fee between you. Each school pays $400.00 total of $800.00

Option #3.
You form an "alliance" with a *NON FIRST school. You will work with them and
build the two robots together and excite them about the FIRST experience. To
reward you for this effort we will reduce the entry fee by $200.00. Total
entry fee is $600.00

* A non FIRST School is a school that has no students on ANY FIRST team.
Option #3 is subject to approval by Chief Delphi.

WHY SHOULD YOU PARTICIPATE IN THIS COMPETITION?

1. This is a great way to warm your team up to the FIRST competition on a
smaller scale with all the design problems and excitement of creating a
robot.

2. This competition will take far, far less time and effort than the past
years competitions. Most teams should be able to build a robot in less than
20 hours with this bolt together, no machining allowed robotic kit.

3. This is a great way to get students involved in a actual building phase
prior to the start of the FIRST season.

4. Students can do most or all of the design, construction and programming
with little assistance from the adults. YES, the adults may assist and help
design and build the robot.

5. You will be given a IFI Robot Prototyping Kit ( many of the same parts but fewer) by FIRST for prototyping when you register and pay your entry fees. It is intended by FIRST that this kit will assist teams in rapid
prototyping of their robot.

6. For a small additional fee you can keep our entire kit of parts ( and
your robots ) to add to the kit that you will be getting from FIRST.

You can register online at: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/cdi/signup.html

If you have additional questions please go to chiefdelphi.com and post a
message in the Chief Delphi Invitational forum. the link is
http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/fo...?forumid=23&s=
or send a message to: Mike Martus mmartus@chiefdelphi.com or Joe Johnson
drjoe@chiefdelphi.com.

If you have participated in the past you know the benefits of this
competition. Space is limited so sign up soon. Registration deadline is
September 30th.

Question Price of the competition

Could some one who previously participated in the competition give me an idea for the budget? I was wondering how much would the lodging and food cost in Pontiac assuming the team will be around 10 people. How long does the entire competition last?

Eugene

P.S. I would also appreciate any information with your previous experiences at this competition.

cost to teams

There are several costs associated with this event here is what I get from teams that participate and what I think will happen for this year:

Entry fee: $800.00 for a team of two robots ( could be two schools which split the cost ) see options for entry.

Additional materials: You will be getting a great kit with a lot of stuff. We anticipate teams will spend less than $100 because the materials may be on hand. Additional materials list will be published soon.

Day of event: We will have drinks, snacks and lunch available for low cost ( we barely break even on this). Cost per person will depend on how much they eat. Most food $1 or less.

Out of town teams: I get a deal from the local Holiday Inn a mile from the school. Last year the rooms were $89.00 a night. This is a modern great hotel with many fast food places nearby. You can put 4 persons in the rooms ( they have 2 double beds).

Transportation: depends on where you are coming from.

Other: Teams wear their FIRST shirts, trade buttons, make signs and all the general activities like at a FIRST event.

There is NO cost for spectators to enter.

I hope that this helps. If you need additional information please ask.

You will get the kit In October and have about 4 weeks to build.

This is a One day event Saturday November 16. 7am to 4:30 pm

Teams can set up their pit the night before 7:00pm to 8:00pm.

the robots can be 16x16x16 each, not total, correct? how is the game, what are the variations from this year zone zeal. is there a weight limit per bot, or is it a weight limit total between both bots?

Please read

We at Chief Delphi have created an event called "The Chief Delphi Invitational". This is our 7th annual event.

This competition is NOT the FIRST competition, and not associated with FIRST in any way.

Our kit of parts CANNOT be used on any FIRST robot as they are not official FIRST parts.

We were all told at the FIRST FORUM this year that each team will be getting an IFI Robot Kit ( Edu-Bot kit) for proto-Typing their designs. Our competition uses many of the same parts found in the prototyping kit you will get.

I hope that this answers your question.

Cost to keep the kit/and robots

The final cost has not been determined as we are working with vendors that have not invoiced us as of yet.

We will post the amount as soon as we get the information.

We hope to keep it so affordable that teams will want to keep the kit and use as a prototype excercise for their students. BTW: this is a great kit if you are teaching Robotics/Pre-Engineering/Physics/Electronics or other science based classes.

You can build some awesome small replicas of the actual full size official FIRST robots with this kit. (Warning: None of the parts from our kit can be used in the actual FIRST Competition or on the the Official FIRST Robots - Prototyping ONLY!)

my team is from long island, if we were to join the competition, would you charge us for shipping our kit of parts, and if so, how much would that cost

Shipping of kit

We welcome out of state teams. In our history of the CDI, several teams have come from the east coast and many from the midwest.

Cost of shipping should not be a big deal as the kit is a lot lighter than in the past. Very easily packaged and shipped by either FED X, UPS or USPS.

I will explore the cost issue with the powers to be and post the answer. My thinking is that it would be less than $20.00.

BTW: Did you see the thread on hotels. I was able to secure a block of rooms at $79.00 per night. This is a great hotel.

Endorsement

Team Hammond has participated in the CDI for the last three years. The cost of the robot is almost nothing as you cannot use any machining, welding, wire EDM or the like. It must be done with hand tools and is usually done mostly by the students. We all jump on a bus Friday after school along with the bot and some tools and go up to Pontiac that evening. After the competition on Saturday we put everything on the bus and drive home. Up to now the cost of the kit was such we just left the robot there for recycling, in ways, not a bad thing, because "when it is over, it is over."

It is an extremely well run event and you cannot get more "bang for your buck" in the world of robotics competition than the CDI.

Now this is innovation...

I just read the information for this years competition and think the permanently paired two machines per team idea is marvelous. I think this is one of the most innovative game ideas I've seen in the FIRST community in the four years I've been involved.

I can't wait to see the competition!

Question Non-FIRST

Our team has a question about option number 4. If our team went to CDI last year but have never gone to FIRST, are we still eligible to be a Non-FIRST school. Thanks for any information

non FIRST School

If your school or any of the students at your school have not participated in the FIRST competition you are still a non-FIRST school . You would need to partner with a FIRST team to meet the rules for the entry fee reduction. If you built both robots you would pay full entry. If you got another non-FIRST team to be your partner you would again meet the reduction rule..
