Seems to me the team has to be more involved in the decision making about nominations. Anyone can think they deserve the award and make claims that may or may not be true. As it is the rest of the team thinks that the most deserving member did not get the award are not happy with the outcome. Can anything be done?

Probably not. This is another outcome that should have been anticipated before the award was rushed out the door by FIRST.
Hopefully, next year FIRST allows this award to be submitted by mentors rather than students. Our submissions for two candidates on the team were e-mailed to FIRST by a mentor because the student submission path was not workable. (Our mentors were not comfortable with students reading the submissions and besides, students were in class for hours after the deadline.)
