Team 2079 Breakaway Bot

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQ_vPt4BqLo

Here's a link to a video of our bot.

The footage isn't great, but it just gives an idea of what we'll be bringing to the table.

Specs

4 Cim Drivetrain, one speed (toughbox)
1 Cim for the lift geared down with a planetary gearbox 9:1, then 3:1 in a gear on the winch
Pneumatics and Surgical Tubing kick, optional attachment for loft on the kick.
Drives over the bump and under the tunnel
Roller in front powered by a FP with AM planetary for reduction

ELEVATED: A ROBOT that is completely above the plane of the PLATFORM and in contact with the TOWER shall be considered ELEVATED.

Is your robot ELEVATED?

Maybe not in the video (I think the lift in the video is a bit low), there are two defining factors on the height, 1, how close we are to the tower, and 2 the height of the pivotpoint, which has been raised since the video was filmed.

So you're right, we are too low in the video, but we have fixed it.

Glad to hear its been raised since then. Remember, your bumpers count as part of your ROBOT. Good luck this year, a unique hanging style for sure!

Re: Team 2079 Breakaway Bot

I'm impressed with the hanging arm. Why did you guys decide to use 2 bars instead of 1? How do you stop the hook from "slipping" downward?

One more thing: The omnis shown in the video gave 1714 major problems in 2008. Just in case, if I were you I'd bring a spare pair of AM Plastic omnis or similar.

Other than that, excellent robot. Love the machining and lightening patterns! Hope you guys don't beat 2791 too hard at WPI

The two bar idea was one that we sort of decided on based on an idea that one of prototyping teams made. The prototype was made with two bars, and it worked so we kept it.

We don't really do anything to not slip, we just don't, I guess it's just friction. We did put tacky material on two of the bars, but I'm even sure we need it. I guess it's just friction.

What types of problems? We did experience the wheel riding off its bearing and bending the spacers that were holding it in place at the beginning of week 5, but we reinforced it and seems to be ok now.

The 8 inch versions that were used had complete failures of individual rollers. Perhaps things have changed since the 2008 design, but we had to quickly buy 8 plastic omni wheels in order to drive that year. The plastic omnis worked flawlessly though!

2 CIMS per side, and both wheels are powered on each side. We built the kit chassis with the wheels provided and 4 CIMs, just powering one wheel on each side (the tackier one), and were unable to get over unless we went full speed at the bump, so based on our testing we couldn't really get over with just two wheels powered, but that's not to say it can't be done, I'm sure it can.
