I love these threads that are my specialty. As head of the spirit committee (along with many other strange lil ones), the best way to get people excited is to make them feel useful. If not everyone is working at the robot at the same time at competitions, get other people to do other things useful for the team. There was a bunch of us who decorated our pit area with streamers, balloons, our team banner, etc. These really got us noticed by other teams and judges...and part of the Judge's award we got was for our spirit.
Between the time when the robot was shipped off and competition, we assembled spirit packages. They had candy going along with our "hart burn" theme, a cd mix all the boys help put together, pencils, pens, stickers, etc. During competition, we had "good will ambassadors" go around and hand these out which helped strike up convos with other teams and really got our team excited. Oh, and in LA we handed out plastic eggs filled with stuff that had good luck messages written all over them.
Also, between each of our matches, we had huge team flags that we ran across infront of the field just to get people cheering for us and signs that had our name. It only takes a few spirited people from your team to pump up the crowd (and other team members).
I have more but I don't want this to be too long so it maybe continued later. And if all else fails, pump up your team with some sugar and coffee.
