2337's lifter has a series of pins. When the lifter raises up one set of pins is pulled out of place releasing the lower supports, once the hooks connect (or more accurately swing past a certain point) it releases some pins out which is what lets the upper structure slide up and down on the support poles. The sound could also be the mass of the structure hitting the tower, there is a lot of mass moving quickly and all the bodies are hollow. Either way, it is a nice sound no?

To answer your next question; not as the system works now. One of the parents did some math and figured out that the load on the vertical supports exerted by 27/33 style lifters is ~2x what the structure can support. Realistically the vertical support beams don't support any of the robots hanging off of us it is only the upper pseudo tower that is supporting additional weight. This MAY change but I do not know.

3rd: Those poles are the same diameter as the tower so that if a hook works on the tower it will work on the pseudo tower.

Hope I answered your questions.

EDIT: Clinton beat me.
