2337's lifter has a series of pins. When the lifter raises up one set of pins is pulled out of place releasing the lower supports, once the hooks connect (or more accurately swing past a certain point) it releases some pins out which is what lets the upper structure slide up and down on the support poles. The sound could also be the mass of the structure hitting the tower, there is a lot of mass moving quickly and all the bodies are hollow. Either way, it is a nice sound no?

To answer your next question; not as the system works now. One of the parents did some math and figured out that the load on the vertical supports exerted by 27/33 style lifters is ~2x what the structure can support. Realistically the vertical support beams don't support any of the robots hanging off of us it is only the upper pseudo tower that is supporting additional weight. This MAY change but I do not know.

3rd: Those poles are the same diameter as the tower so that if a hook works on the tower it will work on the pseudo tower.

Hope I answered your questions.

EDIT: Clinton beat me.

Re: Best 2010 Lifter

No doubt about it Teams 2337, 27 and 33 have the best designs when it comes to hanging. Team 2337 the NERDS have the best design to have others hang from them.

Maybe your opinion (I havent seen them so I can't say for sure)

... But I'd match teams 78 and 151 hanging systems up against just about anyones. Quick and effecient.

Re: Best 2010 Lifter

Some really good hangers at NJ that pop into my head: 25 (a very similar setup to 148, even though they've taken theirs off), 1672, 1676 (I may be biased but ours was one of the better ones there). 2016 and 2753 weren't too shabby either.

25 seemed to have problems with hanging in the eliminations at Jersey. It looked like their mechanism that slid them up the bar after rotating up failed to go up high enough.

In the matches I saw 25 play, I only saw them miss one hang which was when they ran out of time and missed by about 1/2" or so.

I think they hung in one of the finals matches against us but I'm not entirely sure.

During the very gentle playoff matches in nj (hehe) A bar bent that kept us from getting up all the way. We will have a much stronger one build for las vegas.

Re: Best 2010 Lifter

One of the other problems, maybe in the final match, was that the post on the inside of the bar (25'd be able to describe it better) wasn't flush up against it, and became a sort of hypotenuse, meaning they couldn't get up all the way.

Re: Best 2010 Lifter

We, along with 2016, are tied for most lifts in NJ. We coulda had more but had SO many problems in the elims, we didn't even get one hang in.

I didn't get a chance to see 2016's but heard it was good.

Re: Best 2010 Lifter

The best I have seen by far is team 78 at Manchester. their arm was fast and efficient and did not take away from the rest of the game. team 151 also lifted quite well. does anyone have a video of team 25. I have heard so much about them on cd but not seen any media.

Re: Best 2010 Lifter

At NJ 25 had an awesome hanger. 2016 and 2753 had two awesome telescoping arms that were really quite brilliant and we may have to replicate the idea in the future.

1717 who hasn't been seen by most because sandiego wasn't web casted has an amazingly fast and cool hanger
they hang at the end of this video:

If I may brag a moment (because in six years I've never had a *robot* to truly brag about, even if I've had a team that is awesome), I believe that 22 hanging points puts us at the top of the ladder for week one...

But that said, 1717's lift is *freaking amazing*. I love it. It's the only one I've seen so far that might be faster than ours.

Well done, 1717, well done.

Re: Best 2010 Lifter

Our team currently cannot hang (which we might be changing) but i still only saw one team at kettering that i would feel comfortable attempting to suspend from and that was the 2337

25 hands down.

I will toot 11's horn about speedy hanging once I have video (we only hung once in NJ and didn't have it set to raise high enough)

78 had an impressive lift.

I'd have to say 126....but I'm a bit biased.
