Re: Kansas City Regional - 2010
At our team meeting last night we spent a few minutes talking about our experience at the KC Regional. Several parents commented on how wonderful the choir doing the national anthem was. They really appreciated it as a way to involve members of all teams, not just local teams, and it's not something we've seen at other regionals. Wonderful rendition with very limited time to practice--just another example of how talented these kids are!
One of the local teams had great support from their HS band on Saturday morning--having a rocking brass and drum section was awesome. We also commented on the number of younger kids on school field trips on Friday. Again, not something we've seen (or noticed) before but it was great to see these groups get a taste of the competition. Lots of great ideas on how to increase exposure to FIRST in different ways. Re: Kansas City Regional - 2010
I'm apart of FLL more so than FRC nowadays, so I came to the regional to help run the FLL and JFLL mini-rumble/competitions on Friday and Saturday. I was so excited to see so many mentors and students from FRC come over and interact with the FLL kids, they always enjoy having FRC members help them throughout their season. I talked to many mentors and parents of FRC members about getting teams started or joining nearby teams which I felt was fabulous due to the fact that FLL is the feeder program to FRC (and also how it was mentioned in the VIP luncheon, which I was unable to attend, by a student from team 1802 that "when he was that age he never even dreamed of doing what the FLL kids are doing"). The highlight of my weekend was watching a few of the FLL kids explaining the program and what they were doing that year to FRC members.

Re: Kansas City Regional - 2010
I know I was so upset; because last year they let us request songs. We wanted our mascot to have a dance off, but they wouldn't let us get the song we wanted, otherwise it was epic

Re: Kansas City Regional - 2010
Back to the first world after re-establishing contact with the other world (the one where I make money, sometimes):
Do I need to say this was an exciting regional? We had a great time. With "finishing" our bot on Thursday and tweaking it through Friday we were very excited to be seeded #2 in the thick of a very fluid scenario at the end of qualifications and amongst a lot of competitive teams. Thanks to all of our qualifier alliance partners for helping us to get there! It was great being recognized and winning the Engineering Excellence Award, many thanks! Thanks to Bomb Squad and Metal Mustangs for joining us in a great alliance. It was great playing with you all. Congratulations to 2345, 525, and 931 for taking home the gold! Excellent strategic switch after the first final match. We brought everything we had to the field but with our worse than we thought overheated cims we couldn't keep up with your flip. You earned what you got, and against some very motivated and competitive teams! Hope to see you again in Atlanta. Thanks to all staff, volunteers, judges, refs, etc... you all help make these great things possible! All of our inquiries were addressed politely and in a professional manner, keeping things very lighthearted for such a competitive event. One thing though; the lights over our pits were off through the event until the very end, when it became time to pack-up and leave, even though we asked for them to be turned on and were told it was not possible? Having the lights on during the main event would have made it more enjoyable, and probably safer. working with flashlights was interesting, I even had one blow-up on me!Now, with increased motivation for Midwest (tweaks are happening as I write!) Thanks to all and see you soon! Scott PS Chris, it was good being next to you in the pits, even though our robots were requiring enough attention that we didn't get much time to talk! hope to see you at champs, and certainly at IRI.PPS Getting to talk to Woody was a dream come true, this is a great thing you guys got started! Happy to be a part of it! |

The funnything about your guys pit lighting was that we had the same exact spot last year and built an entire intake system and reprogramed in this dim light. |

Re: Kansas City Regional - 2010
Scott, last year the pit lighting was pretty dim, but Show Ready Events (who puts on the regionals for FIRST) told us that it was all of the light allowed so as to not interfere with the field. This year we had permission to use the big diffusers (the white globe-like covers over the hanging lights) that were to provide better lighting w/o the interference. I did not notice a lack of light in the pit area, and I have not heard any other comments. But, then again, I was not the working in the pits! So, please find Rex Brown's post earlier in this thread and send a comment to him. That way two of us will have heard it, and it will be brought up at our RPC debrief. Thanks for taking the time to do this. We want to make the event better each time it is held. Thanks for joining us in KC. Your kids were great. We enjoyed having your team participate!
