Re: PANEL: Decision Making & Compromise During a Design Process

I just found out we will have a special "surprise guest" joining the panel.

This is an EXTREMELY exciting development for me. I know some people will be working on their robots Wednesday night, but if you're free you should definitely come check out this seminar.

Trust me, this is going to be very cool.

Re: PANEL: Decision Making & Compromise During a Design Process

The past two years the conference has been recorded and posted online. The presentations from 2009 are at http://thinktank.wpi.edu/tag/47. Previous years are linked athttp://first.wpi.edu/Workshops/index.html.

Hopefully this practice will continue on another year. But surely nothing can beat attending these always informative lectures and discussions in person.

I'm really looking forward to this one, John.

Re: PANEL: Decision Making & Compromise During a Design Process

I didn't get a time to ask, hopefully some of the panelists will see this and answer it.

What is the percentage of the team that do the CAD work?

Whats the average week that your team gets all the CAD work done?

This was probably the most important two hours for me in FIRST. Thanks for organizing this unique discussion.

Re: PANEL: Decision Making & Compromise During a Design Process

During the Panel, there was a discussion of the importance of forming a team Strategy. What i found particularly interesting was that many of the robots at the panel had vastly different strategies. There was quite a bit of discussion on this with most agreeing that the important part of the Strategy phase was to find a strategy that "fits" the game, your team values, and your team capabilities/resources.

Here is an article that parallels this discussion that took place. It is an interview in:

Reflections – Society of Organizational Learning

Tribal Leadership, October 2009
From the Society of Organization Learning, published at MIT, an interview with Dave Logan and John King written by George Hall.

“People in our study who were exceptional tribal leaders described a sudden, compelling, and often personal awareness that they had been manipulating people and didn’t want to do that anymore.”

http://www.triballeadership.net/media/SoL-Journal.pdf

It gives a pretty good overview of the book and highlights a chapter on "strategy" development that echoes many of the comments of the panelists. (or at least my interpretation of their comments with regards to strategy).

According to the web site, you can purchase tickets at the door as well. I would pre-purchase, but we are arriving on the bus that day and I want to make sure we get there in time...

Do spaces run out for the conferences?
