Go to Post Overall, I thought FIRST did a great job with the rules this year - very simple and very clear for the most part. However, something is always going to fall through the cracks (and I don't mean that in a bad way - people need to know that it's practically impossible to do something perfectly). - Chris Hibner [more]

If I were in a match against 125, I would play 6v0.

Just sayin.

This appears to be a popular strategy "against" 469 at the Troy District Competition: http://thebluealliance.net/tbatv/event/2010oc

21-0
24-0
25-0

These scores were not produced by accident. This was a conscious effort by all the teams playing to get the highest ranks possible.

Re: 2010 Boston Regional

WOW.

The regional has been decided by a penalty, and the worst kind to loose by, a human player steping out of bounds.

It was a REALLY good match, tied 12-12 at the end, with the penalty on blue.

congrats to 88, 1922, and 1768!

Congrats to 3280 on winning Rookie All-Star! You guys were very smart drivers with a reliable robot at WPI, and I'm glad you'll get to Champs.

Re: 2010 Boston Regional

I would like to make a shout out for 1511, 383, and 2648- you guys did great and I remember watching your other quarters/semis matches on the big screen in the pit area and seeing the 11 and 13 scores and feeling really nervous about going head to head with your alliance. Everyone put up a great fight. 1511, congrats on the chairmans award!

I would also like to thank 88 TJ squared, and 1768. I think we made a great alliance because we played it as a team, we had a plan and we stuck to it to matter what the match threw at us. 1768, you had a hard job of playing defense against the best teams at the competition, and you did a great job. Also, thank you TJ for believing in my team, 1922. We had a rough Thursday/Friday but Saturday morning we overcame the issues and came back alive, positioned in the middle of the rankings. Thank you very much for believing that we would be a strong alliance member.

Great job to everyone at the Boston regional,

Mike Klinker

Re: 2010 Boston Regional

Boston Rocked!

My favorite match that we played in was Qual match 78, we lost, but our robot finally flipped over.
However, in the process we lost:
  1. A bar that kept balls from getting under our bot
  2. A drive chain (if we had lost the exact same chain on the other side we would have been fine , but...)
  3. A bearing that was installed in the transmission backwards
  4. And a pneumatic accumulator tank was knocked loose
They weren't huge issues, luckily, we added a plate over the transmission bearing to prevent it from falling out again, Also, we remounted the accumulator tank, that was probably just not secured properly the first time. The bar was only held on with zip-ties, and the chain only came off because the accumulator tank got caught in it (we think).

We would have tried to hang in that match as well, but the missing chain made it hard to turn or go over the bump (our robot drives in a very straight line with only one side powered and the wheel that worked on the side that lost the chain was a slick wheel).

I've never been as excited to lost or to break something as I was in that match.

Re: 2010 Boston Regional

Only comment about eliminations- lol @ the seeding system. Definitely not how we wanted to go down...

Other than that, this was BY FAR, the best regional I have ever attended and the most fun the class of 2010 could have had at their last regional. The teams, the people, the venue, the city, and the overall atmosphere was just overwhelmingly enjoyable and friendly.

MORT felt very loved by many teams and event staff during our entire stay and we sincerely want to thank the Boston Regional planning committee, teams, and the fantastic judges for making us feel at home. The most welcoming and best run regional in FIRST was well worth it and we are adding it to our "Favorites" list for the future.

"Its about time you guys dropped by in Boston, we've been waiting for you" - best comment we've ever received from judges

Congratulations to all award winners and regional winners and finalists.

I would like to thank teams 88 and 1922 for having faith in us and choosing us for your alliance! It was a privilege to play defense on an alliance with two such awesome teams and robots!

Re: 2010 Boston Regional

This year I invited several colleagues to share the FIRST experience at Boston, and they all came away extremely impressed with the organization and enthusiasm. I haven't been to enough Regionals to be definitive, but outside of the Championships, Boston must be (one of) the most professionally run event in FIRST. It was a pleasure to meet and talk to the volunteers, staff and of course all the others teams in attendance. Even the arena security staff searching backpacks for illicit Reese's Pieces were friendly!

It was very gratifying to be part of the winning alliance, and I think that 88, 1768 & 1922 showed that - as Woody & Dean hinted at Kickoff - a well organized alliance working together is critical in Breakaway, and can be competitive with, at least in my opinion, alliances with stronger individual robots.

Of course the difference between winning and losing is often luck. The finals were so close with scores of 8-7 and 12-11 that they could have gone either way. Luck happened to be on our side this time, but the alliance of 383, 1511 & 2648 were extremely good and made us work for every single point.

My personal highlight was qualification #68 which we lost. However one of our Blue alliance partners, 2888 Beaverbots had a flawless match after a frustrating Thursday & Friday of communication problems with the field. A special shout out to the FTA assistant who provided the crucial diagnostic information that helped solve the problem.

Finally, our award winning team website (www.tj2.org) has lots of event photographs posted under the media tab.
