Classmate reimage/restore - you have instructions?

QUESTION: Anyone have the 'official' instructions on using the USB from KOP to reimage (restore) the classmate back to it's original build?

BACKGROUND:
Since last year, I've been concerned about teaching our students how to recover from any problem with the equipment - programming/networking wise. This includes reformatting the laptop and running through instructions to install all that's necessary to have a good Programming environment (IDE), or resetting the wireless components, the older blue (DS) from last year, etc.

I now want to include instructions on reformatting the Classmate

I know I can plug in the "restoration" USB from the KOP (Kit of Parts) but would like to see if there are official instructions.

Thanks,

Re: Classmate reimage/restore - you have instructions?

The steps are listed on page 7 of the 2010 FRC Control System Manual Chapter 1 – Introduction at:

http://usfirst.org/uploadedFiles/Com...Rev-0.5%20.pdf

In the event your Classmate has been corrupted, the USB key required to restore you Classmate
has been included in your kit. Please note that this USB Key, a 4GB Thumb Drive, is not a general
use storage device, but instead has been loaded with the Classmate default image and should be
protected and kept pristine in case you need to restore your machine.
To restore your machine, please follow the steps below (note, this process takes approximately 20
minutes):
- With the Classmate powered OFF, insert the USB Key into an available USB port. Do not use
a USB hub, plug the Key directly into the Classmate.
- Power on the Classmate and when you see the 2GoPC screen, repeatedly press F11 until a
small window appears entitled "Please Select Boot Device."
- Using the cursor keys, select the USB Key. It is the second item in the list (the Key will appear
twice, select the first instance of the name, which is the second item on the list), beginning
with USB:xxxx. Do NOT select "USB: Generic Device," this is not your USB Key.
- Press Enter and allow the Classmate to boot from the USB Key. Be patient, it can take a
minute of more for it to finish. You will now be at x:/windows/system32.
- Follow the on screen instructions to complete the process. It is recommended that, to do a

clean restore, select Option 3, Prepare AND Restore.

Works great....

Sweet! I was heavily focused on Chapter 2, not Chapter 1. Given you say 'it works great', I take it you have already run through this process... with success?

Twice as a matter of fact...

After the reimage you need to install the 2 updates, driver station and LabView, then do the fix to replace the missing .dll file. See this post.. http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=79823

Re: Classmate reimage/restore - you have instructions?

Hi, I had to reimage the classmate, and it brought me to a different installer, and I wasn't sure, is there a specific thing you need to enter in for the "Name" and "Organization" or does it not matter at all?
Thanks in advanced

The instruction file is also a docx file on the restoration key itself.

Re: Classmate reimage/restore - you have instructions?

We ended up reformatting our Classmate and after an orderly install of the USB, LabVIEW update and the DS update, we are rocking and rolling.

The USB Restoration process does work. Repeatable processes - love it.

Kudos.

Re: Classmate reimage/restore - you have instructions?

Hello,
Our team is also having the same problem where we tried to restore the PC back to the original state but unfortunately it is not working.
I have followed the instructions step by step and in the middle of restoring the PC, I see some error messages in the command prompt pointing at about 5-8 Labview 8.6 Installation directory saying that the following files are corrupted and unreadable.

And after that when we restart it, we get this error message:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll
"

We have tried using another team's USB key and restoring it multiple times but we get the same error message everytime.

Does anyone have any idea on whats going on ?

Thanks
