HUD on Safty Glasses

Hi,

Before I bother the Q&A with this question, maybe someone could point out a relevant rule I'm missing.

We would like to use a HUD for our drivers, and have created the following setup:

laptop>cypress>female ethernet jack
Leds on glasses > male ethernet jack

So in order for this setup to work the ethernet jack needs to be connected, but this would cross the driver station lines and I would imagine is prohibited.

Currently we plan on connecting them at the start of each match, but would like to know if there is a better legal way.
maybe if no Leds are being lit during autonomous it's legal? (or maybe it's legal anyway?)

I would appreciate your assitance pointing out relevant rules while I comb the manual...

Thanks
-Leav

Re: HUD on Safty Glasses

Cyber Blue did this with the DIO on the DS in 2006.

I think they just used LEDs to indicate periods. had the Drivers plug in as the auto period ended( so as not to violate the cannot touch the DS during auto rule).

Re: HUD on Safty Glasses

Leav,
Ask the question in the Q&A but i think this is the cover rule for your question...

<G49> TEAM Positions during AUTONOMOUS PERIOD – During the AUTONOMOUS PERIOD, all TEAM members stand behind the STARTING LINE in their ALLIANCE ZONE. The HUMAN PLAYERS are permitted to reach into the CORRAL to retrieve BALLS. Any control devices worn or held by the DRIVERS must be disconnected from the OPERATOR CONSOLE, and not connected until after the AUTONOMOUS PERIOD. Violation: One PENALTY for each violation (stepping outside the designated area, or stepping across the STARTING LINE). Exceptions will be allowed in cases involving personal or OPERATOR CONSOLE safety.

Emphasis mine.

Al, Thanks!
I think they are clear enough that a Q&A entry would be unneccesary.

Again, thanks for the fast reply!

Just out of curiosity, what are you planning on putting on the HUD?

For our driver: ball possession indicators.
For our operator: kicker strength indicator (we have it on the laptop screen obviously, but thought a HUD would be better since he wouldn't have to look down - the whole purpose for HUDs in the first place..)

They are not critical, since they have been driving great without them, but we had some down time and thought we'd go for it. we're not even sure they'd like driving with it yet and may scrap the whole system during the practice rounds! (use regular safty glasses and store the HUD for the offseason)

If I remember i'll try and report back to this thread with the results. in the meantime here's a picture of the kids with the HUD on...

Re: HUD on Safty Glasses

This year, we did something almost identical to this and never had any problems with it. At the start of the match we hold the ethernet plug in our hands and when we step up to the drivers station at the end of autonomous we plug it in.

Our HUD was designed to help line up shots using camera tracking. It consits of 3 sets of LED lights. On the left and right sides, we have red lights to indicate the direction of the target. Near the middle we have two green lights to indicate when the robot is lined up straight with the target.

Re: HUD on Safty Glasses

In 2007 we had a similar setup and what we did was the operator would quickly switch safety glasses after autonomous ended. Not very convenient, but it worked.
