Chief - most likely has everything to do with 47's original high school, Pontiac (Indian chief) Central High School.

Delphi - 47's (and 45's, and 48's, and...) long time primary sponsor

Pontiac Central (47) and Pontiac Northern (65) High Schools merged this past year. The two teams were merged to form the new Team 51, Wings of Fire.

I'm sure Joe Johnson or Mike Martus can provide a much more interesting history than that.
