Help with CNC machining STL file - MasterCAM X

I have an STL file I'd like to machine as a 3D relief using MasterCAM X. I want this shape to pop out of the surface when it is all done, so I need to machine down around the shape. I've been able to do that, but I have not been able to machine down the surrounding surface. It only goes as far as the shape. Any tips? I have been able to get the STL into a 2D projection DXF, but I'm having problems getting just the outline to contour around, and problems with the chains not being continuous or something. If anyone is good with this stuff, I'd be glad to send the file your way. Thanks.

I'm not an engineer, but I'm going to assume that you're using a mill to do this. Wouldn't it be possible simply to machine down around the shape manually? After all, the shape's been cut out already.

Re: Help with CNC machining STL file - MasterCAM X

What about importing the STL into Solidworks, adding a clear area around it, and then exporting it again into what ever format you want?

That's not a bad idea. Didn't think of that. I might give that a try. Thanks.
