Yeah, I too would encourage you to be careful to consider the workload first. That being said, there are numerous teams and competitions in the Baltimore/DC area. And as a result, there are many opportunities to volunteer for FIRST programs even if you aren't mentoring a particular team.

I'm a freshman at JHU now and while I unfortunately don't have the time to mentor a team, I've been able to volunteer for local events and competitions (the Chesapeake and Washington D.C. FRC Regionals are both nearby and the Maryland State FLL program is rapidly expanding).

Re: College Acceptances

I will be attending Purdue next year. I plan to double major in Mech. E. and Environmental & Ecological Engineering.

I was also accepted to Rose-Hulman, IUPUI, and Indiana State. I wasn't accepted to MIT.

I'll second Don on this one. I'm glad you're all so excited to mentor, but be careful. College isn't high school; FIRST can help you grow a lot, or it can really screw you up. (Well, they're not actually mutually exclusive, but there are usually less painful ways to grow.) Watch your credit load and your GPA, and remember you've got the rest of your life to build robots. You don't have the rest of your life to ace chemistry.

I made the selective summer seminar at USAFA (and USMA, USNA) a couple years ago. Wasn't a bad gig, but I like the freedom and opportunities of a major research university with a small honors college, strong engineering and everything else, top-notch ROTC, and an amazing ANG wing for a possible enlisted RC term. (That is, Penn State Schreyer Honors College, Detachment 720, 193rd SO.) If you've done your homework, enjoyed the seminar*, and really want the Springs, good luck on your application and more power to ya. See you in the Blue.

*If you made the seminar, I wouldn't worry too much about the appointment. Assuming nothing was actually wrong (DODMERB, nomination, etc), I don't think I've ever met anyone who made the seminar and not the Academy itself. (The former's more selective.) Good luck!

Re: College Acceptances

Applied to Rose-Hulman and Purdue. Hard decision, but officially going to Purdue. Not 100% on major, but very interested in civil, construsction, or maybe a little mechanical. I have some cousins who are in civil engineers, and are successful and happy. So hopefully I'll make it.

I'm going to Stevens institute of technology to study electrical engineering. It's also close enough for me to come back and help my team out.

For sure Our programmer's going for compsci, our build captain is going for some engineering at CIT, and I'm probably going, but HSS/MCS. I don't know what we're all planning to do with FIRST right now, but it's been a fun four years...maybe start a Wiredcats north, lol.

You will meet a lot of FIRSTers at CMU especially if you take any classes in the robotics department.
