Re: College Acceptances

How many people are applying for appointments to Millitary Academies? Specifically the Air-Force Academy in Colorado?

Re: College Acceptances

I am actually one of the few kids on each team who will not be pursuing a degree in engineering. Although I love engineering, design, build, testing, tuning, and you get the idea, after much prayer I have come to the conclusion that engineering is something I love, but it is not what God has for me in my future. Instead I will getting a bachelors in some form of business or accounting. I enrolled in a program called CollegePlus (http://www.collegeplus.org/) which is a degree in two years for $15,000 or less! A few of my friends have gone through the program and loved it. It works by gaining credits by exam for general education courses in your first year. They send you study materials and I use my textbooks from school to take exams and CLEPS to gain credits. Then in my second year I take any CLEPS they have aimed at my major, and enroll me in a college of my choice along with online classes to finish of my degree and gain experience in my field. Then I receive my degree from them and can go onto get my masters somewhere else if I choose. Overall, it is very cost effective as I can continue working allowing me to graduate debt free!

EDIT: To answer /\/\/\ 1519 has one who is either graduating this year or next (our driver to be specific). Don't know the exact academy he is attending.

I will be going to UC Berkeley and studying EECS. Interestingly, in three years, three robotics students from my (small) high school, including me, have gone to Berkeley for engineering: 2 EECS, 1 ME.

You can also enter your information here: http://www.mdfirst.org/md/Contact/index.htm This will go to FIRST reps in Maryland who can explain the process.

Not to put a damper on your enthusiasm, but you really need to consider the workload at JHU first. A sad part of getting older is putting realistic limits to your expectations.

Been there, done that. Hope it works out for you!

Yeah, I too would encourage you to be careful to consider the workload first. That being said, there are numerous teams and competitions in the Baltimore/DC area. And as a result, there are many opportunities to volunteer for FIRST programs even if you aren't mentoring a particular team.

I'm a freshman at JHU now and while I unfortunately don't have the time to mentor a team, I've been able to volunteer for local events and competitions (the Chesapeake and Washington D.C. FRC Regionals are both nearby and the Maryland State FLL program is rapidly expanding).

Re: College Acceptances

I will be attending Purdue next year. I plan to double major in Mech. E. and Environmental & Ecological Engineering.

I was also accepted to Rose-Hulman, IUPUI, and Indiana State. I wasn't accepted to MIT.

I'll second Don on this one. I'm glad you're all so excited to mentor, but be careful. College isn't high school; FIRST can help you grow a lot, or it can really screw you up. (Well, they're not actually mutually exclusive, but there are usually less painful ways to grow.) Watch your credit load and your GPA, and remember you've got the rest of your life to build robots. You don't have the rest of your life to ace chemistry.

I made the selective summer seminar at USAFA (and USMA, USNA) a couple years ago. Wasn't a bad gig, but I like the freedom and opportunities of a major research university with a small honors college, strong engineering and everything else, top-notch ROTC, and an amazing ANG wing for a possible enlisted RC term. (That is, Penn State Schreyer Honors College, Detachment 720, 193rd SO.) If you've done your homework, enjoyed the seminar*, and really want the Springs, good luck on your application and more power to ya. See you in the Blue.

*If you made the seminar, I wouldn't worry too much about the appointment. Assuming nothing was actually wrong (DODMERB, nomination, etc), I don't think I've ever met anyone who made the seminar and not the Academy itself. (The former's more selective.) Good luck!

Re: College Acceptances

Applied to Rose-Hulman and Purdue. Hard decision, but officially going to Purdue. Not 100% on major, but very interested in civil, construsction, or maybe a little mechanical. I have some cousins who are in civil engineers, and are successful and happy. So hopefully I'll make it.

I'm going to Stevens institute of technology to study electrical engineering. It's also close enough for me to come back and help my team out.
