Dewalt drive question
In the dewalt plans for the CIM adaptation there is a plastic piece that attaches to the top hat gear. It says it is .188 thick but I don't see from the plans why it needs to be that thickness. Looks to me that it could be .25 with no problem as long as the relief is cut around the edge to allow for engagement of the planet gears. Am I looking at this correctly?

http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/papers/1592 I don't know why you would need to "cut a relief" (what do you mean by this?) but it does look like the plate could be 1/4" thick without any detriment. |

The thickness of the plate is a factor of making the sun gear interface correctly into the transmission AND the mounting of the CIM motor. If that plate were to be .25 instead of the .188 the press distance on the CIM would have to be adjusted and would most likely cause interference with the end of the CIM output shaft hitting the second stage in the planetary.
If you have the ability to cut a relief why can't you just make the plate to the proper thickness? |

Greg, thanks for the info. Not saying I can't make it that thick. I just didn't want to if I didn't have to. So ...what exactly does it do? I thought it just held the planet gears in.

the sun/carrier gear that is used as the pinion gear for the CIM motor attaches via small pan head screws to the plastic plate in question. It acts as a spacer plate and a bearing to ensure that the gear is properly set in the transmission and rubbing on the CIM mounting plate is not a big deal.
