Webcams

Does anyone have any recomendations of a webcam to purchase? We're going to use it for our website during the building period. Anyone had any lucking using an X10 camera as a webcam? Im looking for a nice one that will live up to expectations.

X10's are ok if you want wireless webcams. they are kinda bulky though (not nearly as small as they seem in the 10,000,000,000,000,000 ads you see) and the base station needs lots of batteries or a 9v plug. If you want a wired one just get anything. everything is pretty good now adays.

X-10's are not really web-cames, but are more or less wirless cameras that could have a varity of purposes, (most common being spying).
I have a Kensington Webcam (which they don't even support even more), and the image quality is not really that great. It has only about 6 frams per second, and is really bad in low lighting conditions. USB 1.1 Cameras are so cruddy, I wouldn't even consider any of them. USB 1.1 just doens't have the badwidth to get video that great.
The best options are either a firewire or USB 2.0. They are in the hundred dollar range, but it will something usable. Another really usable feature, is if the camera has its own encoding chip ride inside the camera, which will realive a heavy burden from the main CPU.

I would personally recommend the iBOT camera from www.orangemicroc.com I use the firewire one. Also if u can get hold of a intel Pockect PC camera. Those have good quality. Both of these cameras are tried and tested. Firewire is good.

hehe...whats really awesome is to get a capture card for your computer, then hook up a digital camcorder. Thats something ive been working on at work for a while, its really sweet. You could also then hook up a vcr or something and watch(or stream) tapes and stuff. But then, the whole system is major cash. I've got a crappy little D-Link cam, I wouldn't reccommend that.
