What are career options for someone interested in international relations?

Right now I am a undecided on a career choice, I am in college and considering declaring a major in media studies/ journalism. I was going to do an international relations major but my school no longer offers that. I am very interested in communications, social sciences, and the French language.
Some people have suggested a career as a Foreign Service Officer, I am a little concerned about being assigned abroad. I would not mind relocating inside the US or Europe.
Are there any careers like being a Foreign Service Officer only with more flexibility on location?

Re: What are career options for someone interested in international relations?

You'll probably get more comprehensive responses on a PoliSci or international relations forum rather than robotics, but the civil service/USDOS/etc have a lot more positions than just FSO. You could probably find something that matched your interest. As an Air Force ROTC cadet with a political science minor (engineering major), I'm only really familiar with the military side--and not much at that--but it's worth a look.

I see Team 78 is sponsored by NDEP; your NUWC mentors may have some insight. EDIT: ...you're on FTC 78. Sorry, never mind.

Re: What are career options for someone interested in international relations?

There is always, of course, the French Foriegn Legion...

More seriously, international business or media/communications could be another option. French, alas (I do work for a French company), is probably not the most useful language, but it's not a bad one either.

This would be easier if international relations and language skills were combined with either business or technical skills.

Re: What are career options for someone interested in international relations?

A college friend of mine worked for many years in international finance. During school she spent a year of two in France and then after graduation joined a firm in San Fransisco.

I have friends in the US Foreign Service. Basically you have to work your way up to duty stations like west Europe. The people I know work overseas a few years, then stateside in DC for a couple of years, repeat, repeat, repeat.

So every few years they move. I think there first duty station was Nairobi, Kenya, then DC, then Bangkok, then DC then Pretoria, then DC but now it's Germany. It should be more upscale from now on. And there were were a lot of trips to other countries in the regional For example when he was stationed in Nairobi he traveled throughout NW Africa and the Mideast. When in Bangkok he traveled around SouthEast Asia and the Pacific.

It take an adventurous spirit.

It looks like one of the latest mod strategies is to remove the offensive links. For example, I noticed this morning that the links in zara's posts were removed but the posts remained in the threads. I'm guessing at why the posts were not removed but just the links - obviously I have no idea why.

It's because only a few people are moderators in the career forum. Any moderator can disable someone from posting more and delete the spam in their signature. However, only a career forum moderator (of which there are only 5) can do the rest of the cleanup. The rest of the moderators are doing as much as they can, but until more career forum moderators are assigned, it will probably stay this way.

That was what I figured, Joe, but I really could only guess. I think the options being used to in some way manage the spam until the full cleanup can be done - are terrific. The vigilance of the mods is really something.
