Not having been to CalGames, I can't tell you how prestigious or awesome the event is, but the IRI is obviously the premier offseason and possibly the greatest event of any kind in FRC. Travelling across the country to compete is a good decision for any team that can afford it.
I can't speak for CalGames, though. Perhaps the event is Just That Good as well, but a much better kept secret?

Let's not forget IRI is usually 'closed' to the public, given its invitational nature and physical limitations on the amount of teams.
Quantities of awesomeness aside, I'm inclined to agree with Eric.
I love the idea of a team volunteer assignment. Setup & Teardown of the field is probably the largest need of short-term manpower at any event.
