18" Robot Games
which game from past years or this year seems to be the better game either the 2008-2009 year of VEX Elevation or FTC Face Off, 2009-2010 Vex Clean Sweep or FTC Hot Shot, or 2010-2011 VEX Round Up or FTC Get Over It.
Which game has a better game play and is a better game over all? |

I've noticed when people post poles like this and say "which is the best" a lot of people ask for specific criteria (because a lot of us think like engineers) but I think posting a broad question like that lets the thread go anywhere and leads to a more diverse conversation of aspects of the game that the thread creator may not have thought of. Then again it also leads to posts that say "Face-Off was awesome" with no justification, so I guess it can go either way. As for me I haven't been following FTC competitions so I can't judge. |

Re: 18" Robot Games
Thats exactly what I ment "Good" under your own opinion because good in one persons eye can be the worst in the other. I didnt want this thread to be so pointed in one direction, its more to get a general opinion of the robotics community on which one they think is better. There really is no way to say a game is good or bad, because when a new game comes out there is a new ability or new feature that is used and makes each game different.
Please when you post which game is "Better" please give a reason to your opinion I'm sorry I should have mentioned that in the Initional post |

Re: 18" Robot Games
A key to a good game is a mix of diverse robot designs and spectator enjoyment.
I've only been involved in Elevation, Clean Sweep and Round Up (still very early) Diverse Design: Round Up has created really interesting challenges with hanging and scoring. So far this game is far superior than the previous VEX games in terms of diversity of designs. Spectator : Clean Sweep was more exciting than Elevation because specators can understand the game without being explained the rules. The action also happened very quickly with a simple gameplay strategy. Understanding the game without rule explanation is a crucial point of spectator enjoyment. FIRST did a great job with this in Overdrive but some years have been very confusing (i.e. Lunacy) . I think "Get Over It" is more confusing to understand/watch than Round Up. Why do we care about Spectators ? Spectators can be potential students, mentors or teachers. Its very important that they understand a game quickly. |

Re: 18" Robot Games
"Good" in my opinion is fun to watch, hard to design for, AND fun to participate in as a driver or coach (i.e. complex strategies may emerge from simple sets of rules).
