Re: BAA Workshop Day in Baltimore Nov. 6

Registration closes at 7pm tonight which means you can still show up but you won't get lunch. Last email went out today to all team leaders with registration instructions. We look forward to seeing many of the Maryland teams already registered including this year's class of rookies.

Your presenters:
Jenny Beatty – Jenny has been a FIRST volunteer for almost 10 years in a variety of roles in FRC/FTC/FLL/JrFLL, including as a Judge. She is co-founder of NEMO, the Non-Engineering Mentor Organization. She also is a National Judge Advisor for the VEX Robotics World Championship. She serves as an advisor to the BAA.

Sharlene Brown
– VISTA for FIRST in Maryland, graduate student in neuroscience, alum of Team 768 Technowarriors, Woodlawn High School

Brian Bruneau
– leader of Team 1727 REX, Dulaney High School

Mike Dennis – leader of Team 1719 Umbrella Corp, The Park School

Bill Duncan
– Asst. Regional Director for FIRST in Maryland, Bill was a VISTA for FIRST last year and previously was VP of Marketing for a Maryland-based telecommunications equipment manufacturer.

Mark Eastman – Mark has been involved in FIRST since 2003 as a parent and mentor for Teams 1464 and 2199. He was a Field Technical Advisor Assistant at the last two Chesapeake Regional events and the Battle of Baltimore. He also is a member of the executive board of the BAA and acts as finance officer.

Jayesh Jariwala
– Software engineer and team mentor

Anne Kellerman
– leader of Team 2534, The Lakers, Boys' Latin School of Maryland

Sarah Montplaisir
- 1995-97 student with team 238, 98-99 mentor with team 190 WPI, 2003-2006 mentor for team 40. 2007-08 St. Louis regional referree, 2009-10 started team 2775 with Greg Needel. 4 regional finalists, 1 regional win, 1 championship field finalist, quality award, creativity award, judges award, imagery award, rookie all-star award and rookie high seed. In 2005 I was a builder on the Pikes Peak Hillclimb car episode of Monster Garage. Currently a Senior Engineer for Stanley Black and Decker.

Rose Young – Leader of team 2199 Robo-Lions, Liberty High School

Brief Course Descriptions:

Sensors
Pneumatics – A short introduction to pneumatic theory followed by a discussion on how pneumatics are
used on a FRC robot, the various components that make up a pneumatic system, wiring and hose
routing, and weight and power budget considerations.
Electrical Tips & Tricks
Judging and Awards - This session is intended for rookie and veteran mentors and students. It will cover the mechanics of judging including the Chairman's Award process, how teams can help the judges with their job and hints for how the students can be great ambassadors for their teams.
Safety in the shop and at Competition – A brief overview of working safely in the shop as well as the special circumstances of being safe while working in a very small space at the competitions.
The Design Process –
Team Branding and Sponsorship – Review and tips on team branding, publicity, use of FIRST branding, and fundraising/sponsorships.
New to FIRST -
Doing More with Less - How to maximize your robot's potential on a mini budget. Designing around the resources you have to make your robot a top seed without a bottomless bank account. This will be a technical discussion on the robot only.
Modular Design - Design theory involved around building pods or components that are easily separated from the robot for ease of building and repair. The advantages are that it makes better use of the 6 week build season because many components can be worked on simultaneously and "off line" of the robot frame, it's easier to make repairs in the pit, and make changes between regionals.
LabView - LabView Intro, set up, default program, customizing operator control, and Autonomous for dummies.
AutoCad -

About the Baltimore Area Alliance:
The BAA was created in 2006 “to provide a nurturing environment for FIRST Robotics Competition activities in the Baltimore area to help teams achieve their goals.” Membership Eligibility: FRC teams in Baltimore City and the following counties: Baltimore, Anne Arundel, Harford, Howard, and Carroll are automatically eligible for membership in the BAA. Membership for teams outside of this area will be considered on request. Interested teams should
contact the BAA for information on membership requirements. The BAA runs the “Battle O’ Baltimore” off-season event each year, holds Alliance fundraisers, provides team support activities and awards grants, as well as organizing the annual fall Education Day. www.firstbaa.com
The Henry Foundation, a 501(c)(3), has an agreement with the Baltimore Area Alliance to accept donations on their behalf. Sponsors of the BAA activities have included Google, the Maryland Space Grant Consortium, the Maryland State Department of Education, BD Diagnostics, the Maryland Space Business Roundtable, NASA-GSFC, the TIME Center, and CCBC. Teams also use the Henry Foundation for employee-matching funding programs, such as with Verizon.
