It has something to do with your offensive contribution to your alliance. This database shows the OPR for the 2010 season. I remember Karthik describing it really well one time, but I forget where. Check it out in this scouting database.

Re: School Size vs. Team Size

For Saints Robotics 1899:
Students: 60
Mentors: 4
School Population: 1341
4.5% student involvement

(2009-2010 numbers)

We don't have a huge problem with student involvement, but we could definitely use a more supportive parent network and mentor base.

Jeff! I saw this thread and wanted to impress everybody by telling the people how gigantic our school was! You beat me to it!
Anyway, those numbers are smaller than reality. 862's actual numbers are:
  • Team size: 72 students, 18 mentors as of last year. This year's information is not fully tallied yet.
  • school size: 6536 on Count Day (a Michigan thing), all on one campus.
After looking at the data, I have noticed a trend:
  • As the size of a school increases, the size of the team increases. (obvious)
  • The size of the team increases at a slower proportional rate than the size of the school;
  • Therefore, as the size of a school increases, the percentage of the school population on the team decreases.
Perhaps this is due to the availability of other activities. However, another possible reason is that the primary way people become involved in these activities is by association. When there are more people to associate with, less association occurs with any particular person. Simplistically, people are less likely to join the robotics team because fewer of their good friends are on the team.

AS THINGS STAND NOW

Team size: 10 students
Team-that-actually-does-or-tries-to-do-something Size: 5 students

Mentors: 5
Consistent Mentors: 2

School Population: 2400 students
