A quote to all mentors.
If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people to collect wood and don't
assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.~ Antoine de Saint-Exupery |

Your teacher can open the door but you must enter by yourself. ~ Chinese Proverb (That brings the responsibility of the student into the experience of longing for the endless immensity of the sea and it cuts down on the whining when there is no land in sight.) Re: A quote to all mentors.
Since this seems to have become a place for pithy sayings and such, here are two additions to the list:
Three stoneworkers were chipping away at a large rock on a medieval worksite. Upon being asked what he was doing, one replied, “I’m breaking apart this stone.” The question was put to the second worker who observed, “I’m shaping this stone into a block”. When asked the same question, the third worker said, “I’m part of a team that’s building a cathedral.” And: “Whatever we learn, we learn by actually doing it. People become builders by building and harp players by playing the harp. In the same way, by doing just acts we become just; by doing self-disciplined acts we become self-disciplined and by doing brave acts, we become brave.” - Aristotle (384 – 322 BCE) - Mr. Van Coach, Robodox |

Sure you can - use a fire hose.
Our job as mentors is not to teach, but to inspire the desire to be taught. |
