By what the rings on the ball and the slight protrusion under the tape indicate. It must be that plug that they didn't include in our kit.

You are correct. The tape is holding in the plug. As for speed, we have a two-motor (drill and FP) transmission (all gear drive) on each side and a two-speed shifter that is actuated with servos. Max speed in high is about 12.9 ft/sec; however, I don't think we will ever need to go that fast. Low speed is around 4 ft/sec.
