The best way, in my opinion is to find a place where you can support yourself from both sides, like a hallway or in my case, a kitchen island (my mom hated the carpet and hoped I would destroy it). If the uni comes out, catch yourself with your hands that have been touching the walls/counters. Balance will come with time. But eventually you're going to have to risk the crashes and head out in the open. Most of the time you land on your feet (called a UPD, UnPlanned Dismount), but don't be discouraged even if you fall. Another good way is to use two friends as mobile crutches, one on either side of you.
Anyone who bothers to read this should try unicycling! As a marine on the unicyclist.org forum says, "My unis are smile machines". There is just something cool about unicycling, almost elemental in nature.
