Not sure where you're going with a question like that........

The 233 robot looked fantastic, worked beautifully, and I say congrats to the TEAM that designed and built it.

every team functions in a different way. some teams have mentors design and students build, while others are opposite. i think what you need to remember is that it is not how the robot functions or how it performs....it is how much the students learned during the process. some learn by doing others learn by watching and both are acceptable.

Everyone on the team was involved in deciding what the basic design of the robot would be. After watching the kickoff broadcast, we divided the team into four groups with a mix of new and veteran students and adults in each group. Each group came up with a design concept for a robot. We spent three days after kickoff on this process and then everyone voted for one of the four designs from the groups. The one which got the most votes was what you saw in Denver, a six wheel drive base with a shiftable two-speed transmission powered by two CIM motors on each side. Additional features of the winning design included a rotatable three-stage telescoping arm with a hook on the top. Some of the elements of our robot have changed as we have learned and practiced. The current double hook is quite different from what we first practiced with, and we have changed gearing on both the drive base and tower rotation. Still, the robot you see is what one of our four concept groups came up with.

As far is the finer points of design, it is done by NASA engineers. Also, the fabrication of parts is done by NASA machinists. Our shop is a NASA prototype shop, and only employees of the shop can use the equipment. Students help assemble the robot, and do most of the preventive maintenance, but due to the nature of our work place, NASA people run the lathes, mills, EDM's, water jet machines, etc. to make the parts. If we had our own team shop with equipment as is the case with my team of seven years, TechnoKats, students and non-NASA adults would be making parts. We at Team 233 don't have our own shop and there are no school shops in our area, so professionals are making our parts. Still, the students are involved with and are learning about the mechanics, control systems and software for our machine every step of the way.

with the guidance of our wonderful and awesome mentors, the entire robot was preliminarily designed by students before it was built. as kit said before (he got to this before i did) because of where we actually build the robot, theres too much liability for the dangers of the environment in which we work for students to be using the heavy machinery out at the Prototype Lab at KSC. the way our team works is that we split up into different groups on the basis of what you are interested in. sometimes people cross-over into different groups at times for brainstorming and just helping out in general, and some people, like myself, are involved in many different groups. in all reality, sometimes when too many people try to help, it just gets counter-productive. with a team with 73 people on it, if all 73 people worked on the actual design and build of the robot, theres no way it could have gotten done in time. there are just too many different opinions, too many different ways of doing things, too many different people all wanting to work on the same thing, and in the end, it just doesnt exactly work. while i was on the Chairman's Award, Scouting, Fund Raising, Drive Team and Spirit Groups, i also branched over to the Tower Design and Hook Design Groups a few times to give feedback on the prototype designs they were coming up with to help make things better. but all in all, before we even started on designing and building the robot, everyone on the team voted on the basic design concept they liked best before we went ahead and started building, so all in all, everyone on the team had some input.

just an brief glance at the inside workings of team 233.

Well Leslie and Kit both got to this before me, but as they said. We work as the one huge team that we are. We split into different groups. I worked on animation some, spirit, field construction. I drifted into manipulator design and stategy at times. It's been an honor to be on this hard-working team of students and mentors for the past three years. I can't wait to see what you guys come up with next year *sad...graduation...*
