I would assume that it would be to have the balls stack into the hopper in a predictable fashion.

This is what it appears to be, more or less. When you put the balls into the top of this ball hopper, they will sort themselves into four vertical columns, either automatically or via some interior automatic sorter.

Otherwise, it looks really good.

May I ask what size rods those are? They look like 1/4" or 3/8", but I might be wrong.

Aaarrrggghhh... must... refrain... from... thinking... about... riddles... Brain... still... hurts... from... Dave's... "hints"...

Edit: Well that worked well.

Maybe it's because I stumbled across this website; as it seems like it does a really good job of getting you to think clearly. (Except for the fact that after listening to it a few times all I can think of now is 3.14159265358979323846264338327950288...)

Anyway, on to the hint! Oranges can be peeled, and then pulled apart into ten self-contained sections/carpels. Also, can this mean that somewhere in the picture is an object which may be of importance? Can the furnace switch near the bench grinder or the words on the joystick be of some importance? Just a thought...
