The size and shape of White Castle hamburgers were carefully chosen to make them cook quickly and consistently well. If they were any larger, either they'd take a lot longer to cook, or the edges would be overdone by the time the center got done. They're designed for extreme mass production.

I have a hard time understanding the problem some people have with White Castle. I suspect that the root of the trouble might be that they're cooked with diced onions.
