If so, you are in violation of the flag ettiquette.

And yes, it is etiquette and not law.

No. The Flag Code is intended as a guide to be followed on a purely voluntary basis to insure proper respect for the flag.

If I remember correctly, which doesn't happen very often, didn't the government (congress or high courts) vote to allow flag defamation under free speech? Or maybe it was visa versa.
